Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer's dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

Lots of sour components - apple, pear, with some soft banana. Really a big corriander presence. Belgian yeast is hard to ignore and not well blended into the simple flavor ensemble. Suprising that there is 11%+ ABV in here; hard to detect. very sweet and dry with a pretty slim body - not impressive based on reputation but regardless would not turn one down

Marked at 11% abv. Enjoyed a 750mL of this to myself while watching the F1 race. Aroma is of coriander, sugar, spices and yeast with a bit of copper. Pours a clear yellow with a nice, creamy head and a lot of small particles floating around in the body. Some alcohol legs left clinging to the glass. Pretty darn good belgian lacing. Wow, a nice strong hit of flavor, a great drink. Alcohol and then coriander and belgian tripel (type) goodness. Quite clean tasting. Watery mouthfeel with light carbonation.

pours yellow with a little head. the only note i have about the aroma is ’nail polish’. lots of alcohol in the flavor, and maybe some fruit sneeking in later. my notes don’t say whether i enjoyed this or not. i wrote the notes in july of 2006.

750 Bottle. Pours nice golden color with a good 2 finger head that sticks around for awhile. Nice spicy nose with coriander, banana, esters. Boy that coriander is strong. Yeast notes and light candy sugar. Taste is close to the nose but there is a light honey taste and the alcohol shows through. Mouthfeel is lively with good carbonation. Dry towards the end.

750. Pours a very clear golden color (though there are millions of little yeasties in suspension) with a small white head. Aroma is spicy as hell. A bunch of coriander, a lot, a ton of it. Some honey and alcohol underneath. Taste is pretty full-bodied and smooth, I expected this to be a lot drier. Velvety, creamy mouthfeel with a sweet, honey like taste that is a little syrupy and cloying. Candy-like. Bitterness is moderate with a long, sugary aftertaste. I love Alesmith but this is certainly my least favorite beer of theirs.

750 ml. bottle sent by Immy! Pours cloudy golden-orange with fluffy light yellow head. Aroma of peaches and sweet honeysuckle with coriander. Front palate is fresh and citrusy, middle palate solid and yeasty with a crisp, almost sour finish. A hearty taste with medium body. Glad to have had the opportunity to share it with friends - I definitely couldn’t have handled it all by myself.

750ML Bottle. Pours a Golden yellow with a large frothy head. Aroma of yeast and spices with some fruitiness. Taste of funky yeast, spices, alcohol, and a little funk with a dry finish. My least favorite of the alesmith stuff in 750ml bottles, but still quite good.

750ml bottle. Golden with a HUGE white head. Fruity yeasty aroma. Spicy comes through more in the flavor. Finishes with an alcohol bite.
