Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer's dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

Pours a clear amber-orange color with a white ring for a head. Aroma of yeast is evident along with malt and fruit. Taste is fruity with a nice malt and yeast character. Unusual and very enjoyable.

Bottled, consumed on 01/23/08. Pours a beautiful, clear light amber with a fine white head. Lots of active carbonation in tulip glass. Aromas of sweet, yeasty spice and coriander. Strong sweet flavor (candied sugar) with some warm spice and maybe even a hint of pepper. Some citric character as well. Alcohol warmth present and accounted for. Some astringency at first, but finish is very clean. Oh, yes.

Tap @ the brewery. Pours a hazy golden orange with a nice and slightly lacy white head. Aroma of citrus, coriander, malt, and yeaste. Taste is orange, honey, and bread notes up front, with noticeable coriander and yeast characteristics. The beer remains smooth throughout, and the high alcohol content is very well-hidden. I was not expecting much from this one, but AleSmith once again delivered a good offering.

750 ml bottle

Before hitting up Uber’s and Duck Island I decided to share this with the friend who was giving me a place to stay. Despite being around 10% I think it would be possible for a single person to finish this off alone. It is smooth enough that the alcohol is hidden until almost the end of a second glass. The only thing keeping me from buying it regularly is the price. At $12.99 it will be special occasions or trades only.

Aroma / Appearance - A one finger off white head tickled the mandarin orange body underneath. Coriander, citrus and other light scents treat the senses to a smooth simple experience.

Flavor / Palate - The spiciness comes out from the start. Oranges and white bread drizzled with honey form a light combination that washes smoothly down the throat. I find it hard to believe it is 10% because it felt so sessionable. Perhaps it catches up with you after the third glass.

bottle. pours a hazy amber with a relatively thin off-white head that fades and leaves a bit of lacing. smell is of pear, with some strong spices, a bit of wood, some plum, maybe a bit of apple, and perhaps even a hint of some earthy piney hops. lots of spice in the flavor, with more pear, a bit of apple, some wood, and a caramelly malt flavor. a bit mediciney in the flavor. finishes pretty sweet, moreso than i like, with a slight bitterness that doesn’t quite balance the sweetness. full bodied, with a sticky mouthfeel. glad i got to try it, but i don’t think i’m going to drop $13 on a bottle again.

A very bright golden orange in color with a medium foamy head. Lots of yeast and spiciness in the nose. Very powerful and varied tastes come through instantly in this ale. Loads of candy sugar, fruit, coriander and yeast. Nice carbonation. A very nice dry finish which is very well balanced with a very subtle alcohol warmth.
