Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer's dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

Bottle from Julio’s Liquors sampled with the Mad_Indian. Pours golden with a slight haziness and a small white head. Aroma of fruit, spices, belgian yeast, and citrus. The flavor is smooth, sweet, citrus, fruit, and spices. Very good brew.

Sampled with Stegosaurus during our second Boston Tour. Bottle from Julios. Poured a hazy golden color. Aromas of citrus and spice with a note of bready ness. Spicy flavor with a yeasty sublte hop finish. Rather good but what do you expect , it is after all ALE SMITH.

Pours out a golden color with almost no head at all which was kind of a dissapointment. I poured this bastard hard and it sitll wouldn’t give me a decent head. Aroma is very very spicy. Of course there was pleanty of corriander present but there was also alot of clove and rosemary present. In addition, I could pick up the Trappist yeast strains in the smells comming off the beer as well. Taste is, well, not that great, yeah there is a bit of fruitiness in there and of course the yeasty flavor but the corriander and spice WAY overpowered this beer as well as the booze. The alcohol content in this beer is high and noticable, very little if any attempt to hide the alcohol in this brew. My worst Alesmith to date, and not that impressive. To me this was alot like a Belgian triple and I hate that style, always too hot and too spicy, this was very much the same. Dissapointment.

[583-20070907] Bottle (c/o blankboy). Medicinal grapefruit hops, spicy nutmeg and a bit of alcoholic mango. Hazy, orange brown body with a quick foamy white head. Bit of citrus in the flavour continues alcoholic mango and light generic fruit yeast. Medium-full body. Very interesting blend though a little too much noise.

From the bottle, this poured golden-orange-yellow, quite active yet without any head whatsoever. The aroma is fruity and sweet like those faux grape-juice champagne things. The first sip has a syrupy tinge to it with a warm fruit essence that sticks mightily to the tongue. Buttery, candy-sugared, orchard-fruity and mildly spiced, but easy to drink. (#3098, 9/17/2007)

Damnit, this my second Alesmith in a row severly lacking in carbonation! Thankfully, it’s still slightly carbonated, but there’s no head. Pours a very cloudy gold bordering on copper with hints of burnished tan. Aroma is spicy and dessert-like with lots of cookie dough notes and pinches of lemon and orange zest, light coriander. Taste follows suite pretty well, starting with a sweet pang of white chocolate and gingerbread, while some citrus flavors, bitter Christmas spices, and herbal buttery hop flavor follow. The finish is fairly dry, but still flavor with the spices and hop flavors shining through. Still, the finish is a little cloying, but it’s not a problem when the aftertaste is nice and fine. Thick body on this, but it’s too slick for me with the lack of carbonation and all. Slight heat to this, but it’s at a pleasant warming level. I found the flavor to be incredibly enjoyable (love the cookie dough!) and the spices were very well integrated. Better than the Grand Cru. Thanks to Lumpy for exchanging this with me in April.

Pours a light amber color with an off-white head. Aroma is slightly sour with coriander, apple, sweet malts, yeast, and alcohol. Flavor starts off with citrus, coriander, apple, sweet malts, and yeast. Finishes with alcohol warming. Somewhat dry on the finish as well. Overall it’s pretty decent but not my favorite from AleSmith.
