Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer’s dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

Golden and highly carbonated. Medium head that remains. Candied orange, peaches, apples, pears, and spicy phenols. Flavor is tripelish residual caramel with corriander and a tart finish.

Fruity, candy aroma typical of a Belgian tripel. Which this isn’t. Darkish gold color with a white head that rapidly diminished. Medium bodied with slightly fizzy carbonation. Lots of fruit, likely coriander spice, a wee bit of heat. Almost refreshing. The finish is a little sweet, and there were banana notes in a light way. Not much in the way of bitter, just a little along the edges of the tongue. Interesting, tasty. Arguably clean, assuredly smooth.

Alesmith knocked it out of the park again for me. Poured yellow with white bubbly head. Aroma of fruit, spice, and some hops. The 10% was well hidden behind the fruit and malt hints. Kind of a spicy finish. Very smooth.

Poured a transparent straw gold with a white head that quickly disappeared. Lots and lots of cardonation, evident in look, smell and taste. Aroma of bananas, candy and faintly of oranges. Flavor is heavy on the yeast, spicy with a strong flavor of champagne grapes. Finish is flat and a little stale in the mouth. Got this because is was AleSmith, but I wouldn’t recommend it to others.

750ml bottle, 2006 vintage. Clear dark gold with a small white head. Sweet nose, apple juice, a mild sourness, somewhat yeasty. Sweet flavor, mildly spicy, with a warming finish. Smooth but lively mouthfeel. Nice!

Aroma: weird, coriander, mm, sourish Belgian quality with hints of seville orange, very fresh, slightly of vanilla...
Appearance: nice, golden, foggy, verry pretty... peach
Flavour: mm... sweet, a bit sourish, doughy, lemon. Nice, slightly vinous. VERY well hidden alcohol (my bottle said 11%)
Palate: nice, fluffy, creamy, pear flesh-like

Murky amber with thin disappearing white head. Sweet dried fruits in aroma and taste. One of the few American attempts at a Belgian brew that I’ve had that can stand against those from Belgium.
