Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer's dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

750mL bottle, no date. My bottle claims 11%. Pours a clear effervescent honey golden with a staying creamy eggshell head. Aroma of cookie dough, Belgian yeast, lemon zest, a bit of dust, light pepper and spices, and peach. Flavor is pretty spicy and alcoholic up front, lemon and dust come in next but take a backseat to the big candi sugar, yeast, and sugar cookie dough towards the lightly dry finish. A little too sweet, but the alcohol helps this out. Highly carbonated with a medium body. I did think this was pretty decent, though my gf wasn?t a fan 7-4-7-3-14. . . . . Rerate from Odeed, 2000. This has none of the extra sweetnees at all. There is a good amount of Belgiany yeast, coriander and light honey. A litte lemon is also present. I can’t pick up on any oxidation at all--much better than the newer versions.

25.4 oz bottle. My first AleSmith! Cellared for about a year. Clear gold with a pale yellow head. Apple juice, honey, yeast and light spice. Medium, almost syrupy, body. Dry cream sherry, honeydew and orange peel with soft undercurrents of Belgian yeast. Vanilla mint finish. An American-Belgian strong ale hybrid. Achieves a nice balance of bold flavors.

25 oz bottle, via fordest I believe. Pours a slightly hazy dark gold colored body under a small very fizzy off-white head that ran to the edges of the glass quickly. The nose is very sweet and fruity with a hefty dose of acetone like alcohol. Pretty light on the spices, with some citrus, peach, and coriander. Flavor is incredibly sweet with an intense fruitiness up front. Finishes with a citrusy spiciness, coriander, and lots of peppery alcohol. Mouthfeel is thick and viscous with a moderate fizzy prickly carbonation level. For as sweet as it is, it’s not especially thick or cloying though. Very warming sensation on the finish. This was OK, but probably my least favorite brew from AleSmith. I think that I prefer the Lil’ Devil a little more because of it’s increased drinkability.

750 mL bottle. Slightly dark straw color, little head. Smooth palate, perhaps a bit undercarbonated for the style. Sweet grainy aroma with some spicy character. Taste has a spice-sweetness combination with smoother apple-like tones. Alcohol noticable, but not overbearing. A commendable American Belgian Strong.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a golden orange with a fairly fluffy white head. Light citrus fruit and a variety of spices to go along with it in the background make up the aromas. taste is very smooth for such a big gollden ale. Pretty full bodied. somewhat spicy with hints of sweet caramel. Kind of reminds me of a lighter Belgian triple. Good job.

Sampled on tap at Alesmith Brewing. Pours a golden orange color with a tall off-white head. Aroma of candied fruit and caramel. Spicy flavor, maybe some nutmeg, more sweetness. Warms on the dry finish.

Sampled @ Aofoxxy’s Labor Day Gathering ’06. Nose of apricots & apples with a hint of dried fruit. Pours a hazy amber. The frothy head is white and leaves no lace. The start is sweet with no acidity. The finish is soft. The full body is soft and creamy.

750 ml bottle from Plaza Liquor - Pours a hazy golden color with a two finger thick white head. Light lacing. Aroma is esters, spice, and light yeast. Flavor is full of spice and esters. A very smooth, light bodied beer. Alcohol is nicely hidden. Slight dry palate. A very nice beer.
