Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer's dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

~2003 bottle, courtesy of growler. Pours with only a slight perimeter of bubbles. Plenty of peach/apricot nectar, spice, and unhidden alcohol in the nose. Slightly undercarbonated after a long rest; juicy peach and candy sugar, light backdrop. Significantly more fruit than the typical yeasty and spicy tripel.

Bottle. Decidiely sweet and alcoholic, with a sweet spicy, coriander flavour. Brown sugar/candy sugar type sweetness, with some orangey characters, and alcoholic warmth in the finish. Mouthfeel is a bit flat, and as i’ve said, too sweet.

Pours golden/orange with a small white head. Aroma is sour, some light fruits, sugar, bit of flowers, some breadiness from the yeast. Flavor is corriander, some peary/apple notes, candy sugar. Finish is bitter/sour but not that long. Aroma could be a bit bigger.

Bottle courtesy of Black95tt: Poured a light orangey color ale with a good foamy head with little retention. Aroma of spices is clearly dominating with some traces of the Belgian yeast. The spices that probably include coriander also dominate taste as well as slightly funky yeast, some sweet malt and a light dry finish. Alcohol is well masked which I appreciated but body was a bit too watery for the style.

Draught at Lynwood Grill. Pours a dirty yellowish color with a small white fizzy head. nose is alcohol, some light honey notes, and sugar. Palate is thick and syrupy with an alcohol warmth. Flavor is light sugary malt with honey and a big alcohol hit and warmth. Seems the alcohol is too strong and over the top.

Actually one of my favorite Alesmith brews, very close to a belgian in way of flavor, this one was aged abit, so it may have mellowed, but still plenty of spice and fruitiness. very warming, but not overpowering, great beer!

I was expecting a little more from this beer. Clear gold in color with no head and basicly no carbonation. Smells of various spices, (coriander). Had a harsh bitter lemon flavor with a sweet alcoholic finish. I must say I did not enjoy this beer and could not finish the whole 750ml bottle.
