Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer's dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

Pours a dirty blonde leaving a very thin white lace. The aroma is honey, cloves, super sweet "natural honey candy" is what comes to mind. The taste mirrors the nose, very sweet, the alcohal is faint well hidden masking the 11% but warming. As this beer warms a bit candied orange, peach, and caramel all come to mind. The finish is smooth and lite, one that you need to sip and enjoy slowly.

my friend swirled the yeast and added it to my glass. made it look pretty (somehow less chunks). another bottle was served at the same time - an aged one - that had a ton more alcohol flavor. mine was slightly funky with a pretty good amount of belgian sweet yeast, but it wasn’t as cotton candy as usual. in my glass there was no alcohol at all. rerate: had on draft at the brewery. incredible.

On tap 6/7 @ the Brewery: Pours a golden color with an off-white head. Aroma is fruity and yeasty in the Belgium tradition. Flavor is very complex and mostly yeasty leaving a dry finish. Delicious!

Bottle purchased March 2005 at the brewery. Consumed 15 months later. Sweet, candy-sugary like malts in the nose, which compete with lots of spiciness and coriander. Citric oranginess also makes a cameo appearance. Some ethanol is detected retronasally. Mildly hazy copper-golden color with a smallish off-white head and fair lacing. Sweet aroma initially, turning very peppery and spiced. Lots of coriander spicing and orange notes. There is some booziness that follows with some dry, spiced noble hoppiness in the finish. I’d classify this as an Imperial Wit Beer. Not sure if that was the goal or not, but it seems to work. This beer is not as sweet as the fresh sample I tasted at the brewery 15 months ago...

4.5 18 (05.12.06) One pint, 9.4 oz green bottle from Liquorama. 11 %ABV. No freshness info on label. Poured clear orange with small white head. Soft carbonation. Sweet malt and spicy coriander aroma. Full bodied ale that starts with light malt sweetness and fresh fruit (apricot or peach), spice (coriander) flavors. Finished with light malt fade and lingering hop bitterness. Lush, smooth and well-balanced, alcohol is dangerously well-hidden in this flavorful moreish beer despite the high ABV. An exquisite ale, one of my favorite Alesmith beers.

750ml bottle, hazy amber-orangeish hue, with no head at all, yeast, spicy coriander nose, with a juicy orange citrusy note, sweet pale malt, candied orange peels aroma follows through on a full-bodied palate with a yeasty sweet candied oranges, tangerines fruitiness, with a note of coriander, warming alcoholic accent, hint of grand marnier liqueur, malty, honeyish flavor, but no carbonation, leading towards a a sweet marmalade and faint hops bittering finish.

Considerinng the style, I was very surprised and actually a bit impressed with the subtlety in the aroma here - nice soft aroma with an overlying herbal quality to it. Upon tasting, the beer takes a more forceful approach but still, it’s nicely reserved. Fruity yeast, dry and just the right amount of alchohol rounds off this beer nicely. A touch sour, juice-like citrus and with extremely floral qualities. Yeastier than the grand Cru.

Thanks for the botle, hey_kevin. The body was dark gold with hardly any head on top. The aroma was alocholic with peaches, honey and some perfume. The taste had some brandy with apples and peaches. There was definitely plenty of alcohol taste. This is sweet and fruity overall with some pecans in the finish. Strong stuff. The body is smooth and a little thin for a Belgian strong.
