Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer’s dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

750 mL Bottle. Heavily fruited aroma, with incense of curry leaves, candied lemon peels, fragrant epazote, light rosemary bread and a swift flow of esters. Pour of lightly hazed orange peach, with a tinge of rose and fringes of gold. Rim of swirling white. Flavor is a well sugary sweet apple candy chew, with strong runs of candied raisins, plum pudding, light fruitcake, tufts of cotton candy, and copious bready yeasts, with spice a plenty, mostly in cinnamon, capsascin and toasted fennel. If any faults, belie, cloying sweetness is the one. Finishes with a rich blast of warm fusels, alighting the sinuses and dripping corn syrup raisin malts. In there, a tinge of light hop dryness and wicking cotton apple smack. Well built, but a little light on the carbonation and overtly sugary.

Great Belgian strong ale. There is not a lot a head but a big aroma of coriander candy sugar. The color is a hazy orange/gold and the alcohol is apparent at 10%.

Bottle at The Vine restaurant. Gold bubbly pour with a light head and some moderate lacing. Nose is mostly spice and a bit of citrus. It says right on the label that coriander and belgian candy sugar are used here, and they are the two dominant flavors on the downtake. With a little bit of dried fruit benath the two more attention-grabbing flavors, the end result is something special. Finish allows a little hop bitterness, yet remains predominantly spicy with the obvious coriander but suggestions of cinnamon and clove as well.

This Belgian strong is clearly a labor of love and evinces a real attentiveness to crafting. It’s extremely warm and full-flavored, with a complexity that’s rare even for this style. But relative to the price, availability, and hype surrounding this beer, it ranks as something of a disappointment to me. The main problem is its extremely light body and lack of head. I’ve had three bottles of this, none with any real presence in these areas - to me this compromises the many virtues of this big beer, and renders it almost syrupy in places. A real shame (as is at least partly the case with their Grand Cru).

3/31/06: Bottle.
Brown-amber body with no head or lace. Nose of fruit, alcohol and raisin. Flavor is really malty with raisins, white grape juice and other fruit. Smooth, clean finish which is slightly sour.

Bottled. This beer pours a deep orange-gold with little to no head at all. The aroma is dominated by malts and a slight hint of fruit. It’s medium bodied and goes down smooth. It’s a little spicy with a tart taste and a dry finish.

Looks like liquid gold. Pours with faint froth, if that. Aroma of sweet malted spice. Full nectar with few residual effers, almost flat. Sticky, chunky flavors of spices, nutmeg, corriander, fruity orange peel, cigars, grahm crackers, and vanilla. Alcohol is barely noticable. This brew is rich and malty with a slightly sweet character.
