Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer's dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

WOW! I am really surprised how average this turned out to be. I always expect more from Alesmith. Slightly dry and not very fruity. Alcohol is well hidden. Otherwise, really pedestrian.

I saved this for my #1700 best i have at the time.Cloudy amber color, small head that faded quickly to leave nothing behind. The aroma was malty and sweet with a nice fruity side juicyfruit in some ways, spicy and quite floral. The flavor was fantastic, considering it’s been awhile since i had an Alesmith or any really good brew.Nice citrusy side straight away, with a nice spiciness coming on towrds the middle and alsting to the end.The alcohol manages to make a decent appearance but not getting in the way of the other flavors. This was a damn fine brew and well worth having a few more for later trials as it ages.

75 cl bottle. Yeast in bottom. Amber unclear colour with a great white head. Very delicate aroma of sweetness and coriander. Also great taste of coriander and sweetness that ends warming from the alcohol.

Golden amber with decent white head. Aroma has lots of sweet yeasty fruity notes up front, almost bubblegum like. Strange but good. Tons of candy sugar and coriander. Faint alcohol in the background. Flavor is all kinds of yeasty fruit up front, banana, apple, prune fig. Some residuel sugar and spice through the middle and finish. Just the right amount of sweetness. Long coriander aftertaste. Nice smooth, oily mouthfeel. Somewhat warming over the course of the bottle. Has become my belgian of choice when I need one. Wish I could score individual categories higher, to better reflect how much I enjoy this brew.

Devil’s night at Mullmans. Pours a hazy light amber with an ok head. Initial aroma almost reminded me of of some marijuana, then the citrus and coriander are noticed later. Flavor is spicy with lots of belgian yeast, and a ton of coriander. Mouthfeel almost tastes a bit salty to me, but still pretty smooth.

GABF 2005.
