Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer's dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

No head at all. I like my Belgian strong ales to have some gas in them. This has virtually none. Malty honey nose. Orangeish yellowish hazy hue. Sweet on the palate that flips between bitter and sweet. Dry finish. Reminds of some trappists ales (like Rochefort) but not as caramel and way more bitter. Alcohol is a little harsh. They aren’t as good as hiding it as the Belgians.

Bottle. Hazy amber/orange color with small white head. Aroma is mildly friuty with candy sugar and alcohol. Taste is a bit sweet with light coriander. Finishes slightly bitter. Very drinkable, but I was hoping for more.

Deep orange-gold color with a light head. Aroma of fruit and spice with orange, banana, coriander, and pepper. Well-balanced Belgian yeast characteristics and a bit of sweetness don’t overwhelm the complex flavors. Thick mouthfeel with strong, warm alcohol notes and a smooth, dry finish is remarkable. Quite a different sort of Belgian strong ale.

Deep banana color body with ultra-fine particles and a lacy, soft cottony head. Nice spicy nose of pepper and mild lime plus light bubble gum. Nutty malt character in the flavor with pleasant esters, light clove-like phenols, and medium sweetness. Good balance. Delicate, pleasant, and good overall.

Bottle, pre-Rita festivies. Pours a blurry, watery orange. Aroma is apple and a dash of coriander. Flavor is apple, orange, coriander, raisin, and a dash of bread. Lots of flavors swirling around, but they all come together in the finish. Palate is slippery and enticing. Great beer; another winner from AleSmith.

Bottle, from Julio’s. Good nose, sweet. Honey, almond, banana, corriander, bourbon, Clean brownish orange color, sediment was in 2cd pour. NO head to speak of. Bottle had a soft pop on opening. Sweet bitter flavors. Like aroma with fruit, apricot, date, toffee. Medium body, flat smooth kinda oily mouthfeel. Sweet dry finish. Good beer. Really like it on he second pour. It had warmed up nicely.

750ml - bought from brewery 05/05 - Aroma is sticky yeast, coriander, alcohol, and candi sugar. Pours a cloudy orange with cascading bubbles, a small head, and great lacing. Flavor is a bit off but still good. Sweet and bitter, coriander, candi sugar, alcohol, and a bit more malt and citrus than the aroma. Palate is dry and crisp. Nice.

Pours a cloudy orange color with a thin head and decent amount of lacing. The aroma is rich with spices, fruits and a slight candy like sweetness. The flavor is definitely a tongue twister as it takes on many different flavors through-out the beer, including sugary and malty with some spice (maybe clove or corriander) and then ending nice and dry. Yet another reason I love living in San Diego
