Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer's dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

Golden pour with cream white head. Very strong aroma of coriander, yeast, a bit of yogurt. Flavor is strong coriander, yeast, apricot, apples. Mouthfeel is nice with decent carbonation, very dry finish. Hey, for what it is, great tasting strong belgian. Never gets cloying.

Sample at July 17, 2009 Beer Club meeting. Pale yellow color with a thin head. A nearly overwhelming sour, grand cru-esque aroma. Flavor is of a spiced Belgian, but sour. Not too pale, actually. Very crisp and fruity. Lovely, huh?

750ml bottle from early 08 enjoyed 7.14.09. Pours a slightly hazy golden with some larger soda bubbles and small white froth 3.5. Aroma is sweet and citrusy, some coriander, some cardboard oxidation notes, fruity Belgian yeast and noticeable alcohol. Flavor is slightly weighted down by the high alcohol and coriander which combine to have dulling effect, lightly fruity underneath the candi sugar and alcohol, some oxidation, a bit doughy, chalky and yeasty, quite Belgian in profile. Long coriander and alcohol aftertaste. Medium bodied, sparse fizzy carbonation, heavy water feel.

22oz bottle I brought for Beardface’s 666 rating but we couldn’t wait to taste it until Flag Day! Light orange. Aroma is lemon and orange and sweet. Flavor is yeast and spice, coriander of course. Alcohol is well masked A good beer but a better name!

Poured a yellow/orange color. The aroma is fruity, some lemon, and orange. Taste is much of the same, lots of fruit, a little (too?) sweet and there’s also some spices going on. It’s a well made beer but not something I would get again.

Bottle. Golden pour. Aroma is fruity. Flavors of fruit apple and caramel. Perhaps too sweet. Maybe age hasn’t made this any better.
