Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer's dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

(Bottle at Pikkulintu) Poured yellow and hazy with medium sized white head. Aroma was sweet, fruity and yeasty. Palate was medium bodied and sticky with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, honey, fruitiness, sweetness, light sourness, coriander, grass and bitterness. Aftertaste was very sweet and lightly bitter. Flawless beer with interesting bits but too sweet for my taste.

Hazy orange color, small white head. Grapefruity, citrusy, fruity aroma. Fruity (lemon, grapefruit), hoppy and with some alcohol. Sweetish version of "Duvel-copy". Long grapefruit fruity aftertaste. Decent "Belgian strong ale".

750-ml bottle NapaCabs.com - Aroma: sweet, fruity with lemon-, apricot-, orange-, banana-, pear-like fruit, spiciness (coriander, yeast / hops), alcohol; Appearance: clear golden, opaque, white head fades quickly as well as the laces; Flavor: orange-, pear-, apricot-like fruit (coriander, yeast / hop), sweet, salty, malty (malt), spicy (yeast / hop), bitter (hop), dry finish; Mouthfeel: moderate to high carbonation; medium body, alcohol; Overall: a beautiful colored beer with a tasty balanced complexity of aroma and flavor of fruit, malt, bitter, and smooth alcohol (definitely needed). I think it would go nicely great with a roasted / smoked chicken or even better a chicken stew and rice or chicken pot pie.

The Dan Journal #308. Tasted 10/3/09. 750ml bottle. Hazy with a bright golden hue. Finger width of white pillowy head. Bright and medium to full bodied. Totally citrus candy. Marshmallows and tart and tangy citrus yeast flavors. Relatively smooth. Great yeast character.

Pours a hazy apricot-orange with a large egg-white head. Aroma is somewhat spicy and the coriander is more than apparent. Other fruits like peach come and go in the aroma. Boom!: This flavor is fucking complex and profound! At first you think its just a hop bomb, which it is, but then materialize all kinds of other flavors in the middle and end; spice, lots of orange fruits, a little astringent that isn’t bad, flower flavors, subdued yeast, then a bitter, dry finish. My upper half shivers then warms with every sip. Acidic, bitter, and warm all at the same time. Very nice unique opus here from Alesmith. Like a super-hopped, super-spiced tripel, with a little advanced alien technology? Medium viscosity, agressively bubbly. Overall, world class minus. Thanks, AleSmith.

(bottle - 750 ml) Hazy amber pour with a creamy off-white head. Aroma is loaded with bread malts and mild yeast along with some light spice. Flavor is smooth and sweet at the front with a nice bready middle. Some light spice with a lot of yeast near the middle. High quality beer.
