Commercial Description:
AleSmith IPA used to be known as "Irie Pirate Ale." However, some nasty patent attorneys think the name is too similar to another brand, so we had to "cease and desist." It's a darn shame, but it beats an obnoxious legal battle, in both expenses and Excedrin. Don't worry though, we won't change the beer (which is a MUCH better IPA than that "other" brand). It was conceived as an American-style IPA to satisfy the yearnings of the most die-hard hopheads. Its high alcohol content may catch you unawares if you're not careful, but it's hard to resist once you've tasted it. Appearance: Deep golden to light amber color, and a nice beige head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with strong citrusy, resiny flavors, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness and a faint hint of plums and black cherries. Aroma: Strong piney-citrusy character, with vanilla in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, medium-bodied. Feels warm in the mouth from the alcohol.

This may well be the perfect IPA. Wild citrus nose, nice semi-transparent golden with a monster head for an IPA that leaves major tracks on the glass. Mouth is medium-bodied and slightly gritty, very nice. Taste is three-fold, hops up front, with a huge blast of grapefruit or something immediately following, with an aftertaste that is equal parts sweet, hoppy-bitter, and straight up refreshing dryness. It’s been years since I’ve had this, and I remembered it as one of the best IPAs I’ve ever had, but I’ve had many great ones since (including Ninkasi, Stone Cali-Belgique, Bell’s, etc) and this is still the king.

Bottle. Moderate caramel, roasted and soap for the malt and yeast, heavy pine and grapefruit for the hops, with background notes of date, pepper and berry. Head is small, frothy, off-white with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is hazy, which eventually goes clear, golden orange. Flavor starts lightly sweet and moderately acidic, then finishes evenly sweet and acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is medium, oily with a lively carbonation and has a lightly dry and astringent finish. This is exactly how an American IPA is supposed to be. I like it’s unusual lack of harshness of any sort.

Not sure what to say? Very disappointed in this highly-regarded IPA. Very small chance this was a bad bottle, but this doesn’t appear to be the case. Of course no date on the damn bottle to confirm if this was a problem. As of now, I can’t rate this as a top-notch IPA. Bitter aftertaste lingers on the finish.

Bomber from Byeager (Brian) from BeerAdvocated. Thanks man! Deep orange color with a rocky off white head. Great citrus aroma. mostly orange and grapefruit. Hop bitterness matches the aroma. There is also a perfume like hop taste. Slightly sweet malt backbone with some honey. Nice west coast IPA. Not totally what I was expecting. Not a hop bomb. Great IPA but not the greatest for me.

Bottle. Ap: Dark orange, hazy, creamy white head. Ar: Grape. Small sweetness. Fla: Fresh and fruity with a strange chemical bitterness. Really like the fruitiness of grape and oranges. Pal, Ov: Big bodied and balanced. Top class IPA!

These absolute top rated beers within their style are often pretty standard but rock solid, this is no different. Nice orange look with a foamy white head. Citrus, pine and grape aroma with some nice toffee malts. Flavor is nice fresh and bitter with a fulfilling warming finish. Not spectacular but damn good.
