Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

Tap @ O’Brien’s. Pours clear brown with a short-lived off-white head. Aroma of nuts and caramel. More nuts in the taste; almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts. Nice blend of caramel and cocoa and a slightly smoky finish. I’m still not a huge fan of brown ale, but this was very good.

Clear brown pour with almost no head. Aroma of nuts and burned caramel. Flavor of nuts, burned caramel, malt and mild bitterness in the end. The body is medium with a creamy texture and low carbonation. This is a nice, easy to drink brown ale.

Sometimes you find good beer in the strangest places. Last night, a buddy and I ventured off to a place called the Kava Lounge, Downtown San Diego. We went to see a DJ (Who is kind of a friend of a friend). Anyway, the music sucked, the place was strange, but good god they had an awesome tap list. Anyway, I have had this several times in the past couple years, but have yet to rate it. Im really not much of a brown ale fan, but needed something to cool the engines last night after having 3 speedway stouts - given the fact that I was the driver and a DUI would have been no bueno. So, this beer is what it is - an easy drinking, rather uneventful brown ale. It’s probably not smart to have something like this right after a monster beer like Speedway, because Nautical is fairly light and watery. Not bad, not great. Probably my least favorite beer from my favorite brewery. Still life is good when on a random Friday night you find a place with this many great beers. That’s is all.

A fine beer. Nutty, as promised, but almost like a lighter porter for its dryness. A typical AleSmith concoction for its unflinching cleanness, the flavor seemed somewhat straight-forward.

Growler thanks to drewbeerme. Pours a clear brown red with a beige head. Malty nose, some chocolate and nuts. Flavors are bakers chocolate, brown sugar, nuts. Watery palate but finishes slightly dry.

Pint on draught. Possibly the hands-down most chocolatey, nutty brown ale I’ve tasted, yet lacks the creaminess that would have made it hard to swallow. Crisp, smooth and extremely drinkable. Finished the last half pint in two gulps.

Clear and headless, but hand-bottled ale of a dark reddish-copper colour. Nutty, chocolatey, dry and lightly astringent, fully grainy brown ale. Fruity, grapey nuances enhance the malt’s complexity while the leafy and firm bitterness ensure balance and drinkability. Strong mineral profile. Earthy finish. A tasty brown ale indeed.
