Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

Small tap sample at the brewery. Brown body with usual nuts and caramel, light chocolate. Flavor is the same, but for some reason I really didn’t think much of this. From the body it had on tap to the yeast strain they use, I just didn’t enjoy this. No idea...

Tap @ brewery. Amber/ruby color with a small, tan head and sheets of lace. Aroma is musk, fruit, yeast, earthy, nutty, caramel. Medium/light body with lots of foamy carb, lightly dry, lighty watery finish. Flavor is sour-yeast/sweat/dough, malty chocolate, nutty, CREAMY, lightly bitter. Looks great, smells great and the flavor is more striking than that of most browns with a more agressive malt and hop profile, noticeable roastiness and a fuller flavor, if having some holes and light spots--but it’s a light beer.

Tap at Alesmith Brewery. Nice brown-amber appearance, decent sized head, aroma is malty roasty. As expected, a nutty malt character balanced with roasted grain and light hops. A very nice easy drinking beer that hits it’s target well.

I don’t usually post my stuff on RateBeer because I’m lazy but the guys at AleSmith were really great to talk with. This beer had nice color. It balances hops and sweet chocolate better than any beer I’ve seen. Another greaat accomplishment by my new favorite brewery.

Poured a dark amber color with a medium sized, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malts, chocolate and roasted malts. Taste of much of the same, with nuts, and a light hoppiness in the finish.

Draft at Liars’ Club. Brown pour with decent head. Aroms were some chocolate and more roastiness. Nutty on the flavor, with that familiar brown ale twang in the finish. Not Bad.

Tap at The Liar’s Club. The beer pours to a deep mahogany body with a lot of red highlights. The beer has a thick, dense, lively craem of wheat head. The beer has nice lacing. The aroma reminds me of raisin bread and light peanut butter. The flavor is quite good. Nice peanuts and walnuts surrounded by lots of various kinds of hops. Citrusy and grassy. Very flavorful. The palate is very creamy, medium-bodied, perhaps a touch over-carbonated.

sampled at the brewery. Pours a dark brown w/ hints of red in it and a nice head w/ some decent lacing. Aroma is a full sweet one, carmels hints of roasty malt and maybe a touch of wood. Palate is avg. Flavor is a nice sweet carmel hints of hazzlenut maybe even touches of chocolate w/ a dry finish. This is a damn good brown.
