Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

Draft at AleSmith Brewery Thanks to Peter for letting us in only 10 minutes before closing on a Saturday. Pours a dark mahogany brown color with a nice retentive sticky head. The nose is ripe with some caramel and various melanoidins along with a bit of roast and chewy toffee notes. The flavor is a little dry with a nice solid malty body and a creamy roudned finish. Balanced and tasty, a definite good drinker.

Ho-Hum! Not bad - but certanly not great. Poured a woody nut-brown color - had high hopes based on alesmiths reputation, but they were let down a little. Certainly nt a bad beer - but not a rave either. A woody, nutty flavor that was a little better than the neutral nose. no variation in flavor - a littel bubble, but nothing that really riches out and grads ya. (But not offensive either). Better than other brown ales - would try again - maybe it was unfair - tasted after speedway stout.

Draft, Liar’s Club from early Dec ’05. Pours ruddy brown (looked dark but also was viewed in low lighting). Rich nutty caramel aromas and flavors, and a touch of roast and fruit. Very flavor-ful and with a nice body.

Tasted on draft @ the brewery. Nice job here. Fluffy, white head with a creamy, smooth, nutty finish to this beer. Very well balanced. I like this beer.

tap@Liars Club: Dark brown with a reddish tint. Aroma and flavor similiar, especially after drinking for 12 hours and having a fuego. Malty with notes of toffee, fruit, and nuts. Tasty. Thats about I can say and read.

This finally made it on tap here in Portland. Pours very dark cherry red, close to black with a off-white head. Very bit burnt roastiness to this, biscuty malts and burnt chocolate. Way more complex than most brown ales that you find, almost smokey quality to it, tasting much bigger than 4.8%.
