Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

Reddish brown, small white ahead. Some toasty, some nutty aromatics. Mellow toastiness with rich malt flavors, some bitterness especially noticale in the finish with some roast astringency. Mouthfeel is smooth and slightly dry.

On tap at brewery. Toasted, nutty qualities in both the aroma and flavor. Good balance of malt and hops, but I thought both could be bumped up to get a 5-5% ABV brew with a little more body. Overall, pretty good.

On draught at Liar’s in San Diego. I had smapled this at the brewery yesterday and enjoyed it greatly for the style. Roasty, milky, creamy aroma with slight smoked hints. Amber/copper color that’s transparent with a frothy light tan head and nice lacing. Smooth and roasty flavors to start with hints of chocolate with more roastinees. Mildly thin.

Why is it that every brown ale I really dig isn’t available in Buffalo? On tap at the Liars Club (2 of.. uh..) Doughy hop nose. Sweet up frong followed by this really cool cascade of sweet caramel, some fruit and a solid caramel/dough finish. Damn.

Tap at Alesmith. Deep brown, nice head. Chocolate and coffee aroma. Flavor had a pronounced depth of malt flavor, with a focus on chocolate. Having said that, there was a dry finish to the beer. Easily one of the best brown ales out there. Alesmith dude (Brad?) described it as sort of a hybrid between a brown and a porter. Good stuff. Should make note of the small sample size. Unfortunately, not a bottled offering.

On draught @ Alesmith Brewing Company. Medium Brown. A great brown ale overall with a lovely aroma showing hints of toasty, roasty and caramel malts and a zesty, hearthy, rich and meaty malt accented flavor. Tasty.
