Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

Growler from a trade with WeeHeavySD. Pours a clear dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of nuts, caramel, and roast. Great flavor, a little nutty, but a little light body. Great session beer...I might have been able to drink a growler by myself :)

Sample from a growler. Dark brown pour with a medium tan head. Malty aroma with nuts and coffee. Creamy vanilla flavor that is a tad sweet up front, followed by a roasty coffee and nuts finish. Truly outstanding for a brown ale.

Thanks to Homerwantsbeer for sharing a growler. The beer pours a clear dark amber-brown color with a miniscule white head that disappears quickly. Spots and short strings on the glass. Equal parts fruit and malt in the nose. Medium, clean body with flavors of malt, caramel and sweet fruit, and a mildly hoppy undertone throughout. The finish is sweet chocolate malt with a fruity/nutty aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

(draught) dark brown with small tan head. Roasty malt/nutty aroma. Flavor is well balanced with malt but enough hops in the finish.

On tap @ O’Brien’s: Faint and mild aroma barely detectable, so I am unable to note but yet at the same time giving it a fair score. Flavor is pure nuts with a wide assortment such as pistachio, cashew, almond, and hazelnut. Also, there is a perfectly toasted malt background which really allows for this drink to be as good as it is. Appearance was simply a dark brown color while a creamy topping of head iced the cake sort of speak.

Tap at the brewery. Dark brown pour. Very roasty and nutty (duh). Lots of malty goodness. Flavor was much the same, very drinkable and smooth overall.
