Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

(On tap) This is a rich, good, although somewhat typical brown ale. There are some hops, which I appreciate. I like the way this beer does not come across as too heavy: it has a rich aroma and flavour, but it is still clean and refreshing. There is some complexity, in the form of a coarseness, to the malt flavour. Overall, it could be a bit more interesting, but this is certainly among the best beers of its style that I have tried.

I had to travel all the way to San Diego to enjoy this on draft! Light, nutty aroma is deceiving into a rich and malty flavor. Develops roasted tones as it finishes slightly sweetly. Awesome brown.

Great brew scene while visiting San Diego. This brew was dark brown and a great brown malty aroma. No bitterness from hops just a good smooth brown ale Very rich and thick for a 4.8% Great mouthfeel to go along with great malty flavors.

Sampled @ O’Brien’s San Diego. So this is my favorite brewery and I was let down by this one. Where is the aroma??? Have my sinuses abandoned me or are they missing??? A moderately tasty beer with hints of almond, cashew, chocolate, and biscuit but nothing jaw-dropping. Will have to give this another try to see if I missed something.

Dark brown with a rich head. Nutty sweet nose with a hint of chocolate. Sweet flavour, good body for style. Pleasing nuttiness but quite sweet at the back. A rich, decadent example.

On tap at tasting room @ AleSmith Brewery. Dark brown body with rocky tan head. Nutty, earthy, chocolaty nose. Some coffee and yeasty notes. Sweet, roasty flavor. Well balanced but slightly watery in finish.

Draught at brewery. Deep rich dark brown with white head and lacing. Pecan and chestnut in the nose--nice! Lovely roasted flavors with a slightly toasty, long-lasting finish.
