Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

Draught Fully dark brown beer; rich dark-yellow, dense head. Chocolate, slightly nutty, hazelnutchocolate. Very smooth chocolatey taste, dark, but sweet bread. Very well-bodied, full creamy-nourishing texture. It’s clean, but not very characterful. Then again, it’s not meant as an assertive IPA.

On-tap today at Stone. Pours brownish red with a creamy, off-white head, good lace. Smells light and malty despite the brown color, smells a bit nutty as well. Tastes dark and malty sweet and a bit nutty. Medium body, nice velvetty smooth carbonation.

Pours a mahogany brown color with a light brown head. Aroma is malty, nutty, toasty, and a peppery hops. Flavor is nutty, toasty, roasty, and a peppery finish. One of the best brown ales I have ever had and I do not like brown ales.

at Brewery. Dark red/brown with a 1 finger off white head. Smell is sweet candy sugar, medium piney hops and a slight subdued caramel.A little bit of fruit. Taste starts with a sweet caramel note then the hops jump out. Nice mellow pine hops that really stand out. Would love to know what hop this is. Mouthfeel is creamy with a dry finish at the end.

On tap at Alesmith. Pours dark (seemed almost blue in cup) with a tan head. Berry aroma, but has a nutty, butterscotch flavor that finishes slightly bitter and flat.

tap at O’brien’s on 3/3/08..... poured a dark brown, almost cola like, allowing some light to penetrate through. a soapy off-white head accompanied it....aroma was vey big on the careamel malt accented by a nice nut component and softer chocolate notes.... flavor was very smooth, nutty, with lots of caramel malt, a little toffee and some chocolate to add to the mix..... def one of the better brown ales that i’ve had the opportunity to try.
