Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

Always on tap at Liar’s Club. Finally I get around to trying a pint and rating it. This is a perfect example of a good session brown ale. Dark brown draft pour with a silky white head and sticky lacing. Aroma of straight up sugared caramel and toffee, simple and to the point. Biscuit flavors with light chocolate and toasted cinnamon bread dominate with an adequate bitterness. Thoroughly enjoyable, like a "Dog" on steroids.

Before drinking this, I thought "I bed this is going to be like Newcastle, but with all of the flavour levels turned up to 11." I was right. It was deliciously nutty and choclately. Basically a complete amping up of the standard brown ale.

On tap at The Red in Santa Cruz. Ruddy dark brown, decent 1 finger head colored tan. Adequate retention. Big toffee and caramel aromas, roasty chocolatey malt. Nice toasty malt background to a sweet toffee note. Rich and nutty. Very English. A little light on body but not distractingly so. A great tasting beer that you can go through several pints of.

tap at O’Brien’s - Pours dark brown with a thin, lasting head. It has a rich caramel malt aroma and flavor and is somewhere between light and medium bodied. It’s a good brown ale, but my expectations for Alesmith are very high because of their many other great beers and this one didn’t really meet them.

Tap @ the AleSmith brewery. Pours a hazy deep brown with a tan head. Aroma is roasted nuts, caramel, malt, and slightly detectable chocolate as well. Taste is caramel and nut up front with dark fruits, chocolate, and malt at the end. Very nice and solid beer.

On draft @ O’Brien’s. Poured a hazy milk chocolate brown with a medium sized beige head. Nose of roasted almonds, caramel malt and some dark fruits. Medium in body and very easy to drink.

Pint glass on tap at the Liars Club in Alpine. Poured a dark brown color with a small dense white head that lasted a only a short while. The aroma was medium-light in strength, and had notes of sweet roasted malts, anise and walnuts. The flavor featured more walnuts, dates, black licorice and a touch brown sugar. The mouthfeel was very very full, this is a malt lovers dream. The finish was short and bittersweet. Overall: A good beer for malt lovers. Recommended.
