Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

Roasted grains smell (at a good level, not too strong or overpowering). OK lacing and head. A little dry (I prefer sweet). Actually a good mild beer, but too strong my non-beergeek friends, and too mild for me. Hmmm. 7,3,7,3,15:3.5 Tried again at PP Carlsbad, 12/19/07: 6,3,5,3,13: 3.0

Really nutty brew! Lots of nut flavor, with caramel hints as well. abit more roasted malts than I was expecting, maybe abit too much. Still a good beer, but not one of my favorites from Alesmith.

On tap @ Alesmith, RBSG. Dark amber color, moderately thick 1 cm head. Nutty aroma backed by earthy hops. Lightly hoppy, nice toasted malt finish. Light carbonation. A very nice brown, touched by enough hops to keep it from being boring.

Sampled on tap at Alesmith - RBSG ’08, thanks Peter! Pours clear brown with an off-white head. Nice nose of caramel, biscuit, mocha and a tinge of roastiness. Nice brown ale, drinkable and tasty. Notes of mocha, caramel, earth, moderately sweet/moderately bitter - lightly resinous at the very end. Medium, round and creamy with moderate carbonation. Nice beer.

A dark brown body with a thin, off-white head. Smooth and quite tasty with nuts, chocolate, toasted grains and slight hints of the bitter hops. Hopefully next time I will be able to have more than just a small sample. A tasty beer nevertheless.

Draught at Fathers Office. Dark brown with a medium beige head. Toasted bread, light roast, coffee, and light spicy hop aromas. The flavor has light toffee and sweet caramel with coffee and light burnt/roasted flavors and some dark chocolate. Medium-light body with overly fizzy carbonation. The flavor profile is spot on, but the malt could be a little more substantial and the carbonation was too high.
