Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

draft @ alesmith - creamy brown with thin head; rich, nutty caramel flavors and the trademark alesmith texture; flavor on the slight side, but this is one smooth drink; a great brown ale

Absolute top of its style. Had this on tap at Pizza Port in Solana Beach, CA. Medium brown color with small off-white head. Malty, nutty goodness (hazelnuts dominate), some chocolate, surprisingly complex taste. These guys just do not make a bad beer, or even an average one.

Pours an attractive deep caramel with a thin tan head. Sweet nutty and roasted malt nose and flavor. Smooth on the palate. One of the better of this style.

tap at O’brien’s on 3/3/08..... poured a dark brown, almost cola like, allowing some light to penetrate through. a soapy off-white head accompanied it....aroma was vey big on the careamel malt accented by a nice nut component and softer chocolate notes.... flavor was very smooth, nutty, with lots of caramel malt, a little toffee and some chocolate to add to the mix..... def one of the better brown ales that i’ve had the opportunity to try.

Brown with a good off-white head. Aroma of nuts, chocolate, and malt. Flavors roasted nutty malt, chocolate, coffee, and a slight bit of hops. Very good brown ale.

(draught) dark brown with small tan head. Roasty malt/nutty aroma. Flavor is well balanced with malt but enough hops in the finish.

On tap at the brewery: Beer pours medium brown in color with a nice off white head. Aroma is very chocolatey and malt. Flavor is one of the best chocolate malt I have had. Up there with Robert the Bruce in my book. Enjoyable.

Draft at Stone Brewery. Aroma was toasted malt, chocolate malt, and smokiness. Pretty good brown ale, but more of a hybrid with a smoked beer or something.
