Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

Sample from a growler. Dark brown pour with a medium tan head. Malty aroma with nuts and coffee. Creamy vanilla flavor that is a tad sweet up front, followed by a roasty coffee and nuts finish. Truly outstanding for a brown ale.

On tap at O’Brien’s. Pours the rich, transparent color of California redwood with a thin layer of marshy ivory head. The aroma is brimming with malty tones highlighted by loads of toasted hazelnuts. Nutty, fleshy crystal malt husks dance in front of my nostrils. Medium bodied, lightly carbonated mouthfeel. Some hints of light raisin fruitiness with a smidgen of cinnimon spice, but mostly just pleasant dark malts. There’s a bit of an acidic tinge as well thats a pleasant addition to the flavor profile. I’m starting to bit up some very light clove spice in the final smack as well, along with some dry mocha powder. Well balanced, definitive brown ale.

Nose of candied, iced tea laden nuts. Dry and soft on the palate with less depth than expected from the color and initial nose. Clean crips and dry finish that dissapears at mid palate.

On tap @ O’Brien’s: Faint and mild aroma barely detectable, so I am unable to note but yet at the same time giving it a fair score. Flavor is pure nuts with a wide assortment such as pistachio, cashew, almond, and hazelnut. Also, there is a perfectly toasted malt background which really allows for this drink to be as good as it is. Appearance was simply a dark brown color while a creamy topping of head iced the cake sort of speak.

Draft from the tasting bar @ AleSmith. Brown in the glass with a off-white head. Sweet malty aroma. The flavor finds chocolate, nut, roast, and a slight espresso. Medium body. A very decent brown.

On-tap today at Stone. Pours brownish red with a creamy, off-white head, good lace. Smells light and malty despite the brown color, smells a bit nutty as well. Tastes dark and malty sweet and a bit nutty. Medium body, nice velvetty smooth carbonation.
