Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

On tap. Turbid brown on the pour with a short, almost tan head. Spots of lacing. The aroma was nuts, roasted malts and light chocolate. The flavor was dry, roasted malts, chocolate, earth and some light spice. Almost medium bodied. Effortless to drink. Wow. A nice brown ale that doesn’t turn into a sour mess.

A fine beer. Nutty, as promised, but almost like a lighter porter for its dryness. A typical AleSmith concoction for its unflinching cleanness, the flavor seemed somewhat straight-forward.

Sampled in San Diego in June. A nice beer, but not to the standard that AleSmith is famous for. Still one of the best Brown Ales that you will find. A very nice beer with a nice aroma. Taste is very nice, but nothing to be impressed by.

Sampled on Tap at Alesmith. Pours a translucent, maple brown with a thin, creamy white head. Aroma was nutty and malty. Flavor was the same with some dark toast, nutty malts, sweet, caramel. Finish is thin. Sessionable. Won’t knock you over but it’s not supposed to.

Draft. Pours a medium translucent brown. Very very nice malt flavors with chocolate hints. Some nice nutty toned too. Very crisp and smooth mouth. One of the top brown ales!

On tap at The Red in Santa Cruz. Ruddy dark brown, decent 1 finger head colored tan. Adequate retention. Big toffee and caramel aromas, roasty chocolatey malt. Nice toasty malt background to a sweet toffee note. Rich and nutty. Very English. A little light on body but not distractingly so. A great tasting beer that you can go through several pints of.

Sometimes you find good beer in the strangest places. Last night, a buddy and I ventured off to a place called the Kava Lounge, Downtown San Diego. We went to see a DJ (Who is kind of a friend of a friend). Anyway, the music sucked, the place was strange, but good god they had an awesome tap list. Anyway, I have had this several times in the past couple years, but have yet to rate it. Im really not much of a brown ale fan, but needed something to cool the engines last night after having 3 speedway stouts - given the fact that I was the driver and a DUI would have been no bueno. So, this beer is what it is - an easy drinking, rather uneventful brown ale. It’s probably not smart to have something like this right after a monster beer like Speedway, because Nautical is fairly light and watery. Not bad, not great. Probably my least favorite beer from my favorite brewery. Still life is good when on a random Friday night you find a place with this many great beers. That’s is all.

Does a good brown! Full of sesame and nutty notes. Slightly sweet with lots of tannin like flavors in the mix. Pours brown with white head.
