Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

On tap at the brewery. Dark mahogany brown with a very creamy light tan head. Soft hops spice in the aroma with both fruitiness and earthiness and good bitterness from both the hops and toasted malt. The aroma leads directly into the flavor delivering all of the same characteristics onto the palate. The body is full, yet still light and easygoing. Very drinkable with a lot of dimension for this modest style.

Is pours into the red cup a deep brown with a big foamy head. Malty aroma. Smith maalty flavor hints of carmel and choclate . Fishenes super smith with slight hop presence. A truley gummy brew to ejoy before a truley great football team takes the feild rates on a greatbpwice of hardware

On tap at the Liar's Club. Dark brown hue bordering on blackness. The aroma is slightly malty and nutty. Very nice smooth texture, however there really isn't much flavor in this beer. Hints of nuts and malts but pretty weak and/or too subtle. I ate some pretty spicy food before I had it though so maybe that affected my palate a bit much. Not on par with other Alesmith beers I've had.

On tap at Alesmith. Great caramel red-brown in the glass. Fruity and nutty with malt on the nose/. Taste is good, but finish is lacking.

I don’t usually post my stuff on RateBeer because I’m lazy but the guys at AleSmith were really great to talk with. This beer had nice color. It balances hops and sweet chocolate better than any beer I’ve seen. Another greaat accomplishment by my new favorite brewery.

Deep brown, good head w/ light lacing. Hint of coffee on the nose, but roasted nuts and coffee on the tongue. Dry to the palate w/ tingle on carbonation.

(On tap) This is a rich, good, although somewhat typical brown ale. There are some hops, which I appreciate. I like the way this beer does not come across as too heavy: it has a rich aroma and flavour, but it is still clean and refreshing. There is some complexity, in the form of a coarseness, to the malt flavour. Overall, it could be a bit more interesting, but this is certainly among the best beers of its style that I have tried.

On tap at brewery. Toasted, nutty qualities in both the aroma and flavor. Good balance of malt and hops, but I thought both could be bumped up to get a 5-5% ABV brew with a little more body. Overall, pretty good.
