Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

Draft. Brown beer with a nice light tan head. Malty and light nutty aroma. Malty flavor with light cocoa and light hops. Medium bodied. Malt and light darker malts linger. Easy drinking.

On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Pours with a light brown head and a hazy deep brown body with good lacing. Aroma of nut, maple, chocolate, and light spice. Taste is very palatable, with nuts, spices, and cinnamon with a touch of tobacco. Light carbonation and a water like to dry mouthfeel.

Clear brown pour with almost no head. Aroma of nuts and burned caramel. Flavor of nuts, burned caramel, malt and mild bitterness in the end. The body is medium with a creamy texture and low carbonation. This is a nice, easy to drink brown ale.

In short: Superior yet classic nutty Brown-Ale
How: Hand-bottled flip-top brought to Montreal by WeeHeavySD. Thanks Jon.
The look: Clear ruby brown body with a short-lived beige head (I’m sure a fresh pint on tap would have a good head retention)
In long: Very nutty on the note. Body felt rather full and presented flavours of toasted nuts, crisp caramel and toasted bread. Leafy hops were not very tasty and were happy just to do their balancing job without interfering with the malt flavours. The beer felt creamy yet crisp at the same time. The carbonation wasn’t very lively but that was to be expected with a days-old hand-bottled flip-top. Despite the hand-bottled this was one of the best session Brown Ale I’ve had so I can easily imagine how good a fresh pint from a tap must be. The bottle we drank was a 3.5 but because of the hand-bottled thing I’ll be as generous as an oil tycoon to a republican campaign.

Thanks to Homerwantsbeer for sharing a growler. The beer pours a clear dark amber-brown color with a miniscule white head that disappears quickly. Spots and short strings on the glass. Equal parts fruit and malt in the nose. Medium, clean body with flavors of malt, caramel and sweet fruit, and a mildly hoppy undertone throughout. The finish is sweet chocolate malt with a fruity/nutty aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

This finally made it on tap here in Portland. Pours very dark cherry red, close to black with a off-white head. Very bit burnt roastiness to this, biscuty malts and burnt chocolate. Way more complex than most brown ales that you find, almost smokey quality to it, tasting much bigger than 4.8%.

On Tap @ Brewery. Brown color with light brown head. Light nutty aroma with some caramel notes. Nice nutty and caramel malt flavor. Tasty with a bit of hops to round it out.

Dark brown with a small white head. Roasty sweet chocolate and nutty aroma. Flavor is the same. A dry roasted nuttiness lingers in the finish. My only complaint is that it was too thin.
