Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

Draught at brewery. Deep rich dark brown with white head and lacing. Pecan and chestnut in the nose--nice! Lovely roasted flavors with a slightly toasty, long-lasting finish.

(Draft: Liars' Club in SD) Wonderfully nutty flavor with a mildly sweet and toasty maltiness that adds just a touch of bitterness; Very mild hops is definitely subdued in this beer and is part of the reason why the finish is so light and short-lived; The nose has very little aroma and is faintly malty; Dark ruddy brown in color; Light tan head has excellent retention and lacing that coats the glass

Draught @ Papago Brewery

The beer as it spills for the keg into the appropriate container a transparent brown, the head prodigious in size and the texture spumous, the color a toothsome tan with the lace a thick and sticky sheet to obscure the glass. Nose is slightly floral, nice nutty malt sweetness, fresh and crisp with the start somewhat sweet, thickly malted and the top fair to middling in feel. Finish has a nice moderate carbonation and the hops pleasingly spicy as the beer warms to the room and the glass, quite dry and a decent drinking beer, certainly not the worst Brown Ale I’ve tasted, but do like most all the other Alesmith beers better than this one, still worth a sample.

Sampled from draught at AleSmith Brewing Company.
Dark brown beer with an orange gleam and a fine light tan head. Mostly dark roasted malt and little spices in the aroma. Tones of bitter chocolate. Roasted malt in the flavor as well along with plenty of fruit (oranges) and light spices. Another tasty one from AleSmith!

On tap At O’Brien’s in San Diego on 08/01/2008 on the RBSG Friday Pub Crawl. Deep brown body with mohogany highlights and a medium creamy off-white head. Ruch nutty aroma. Nutty and roasty flavor. Medium body with moderately low carbonation.

Tap at The Liar’s Club. The beer pours to a deep mahogany body with a lot of red highlights. The beer has a thick, dense, lively craem of wheat head. The beer has nice lacing. The aroma reminds me of raisin bread and light peanut butter. The flavor is quite good. Nice peanuts and walnuts surrounded by lots of various kinds of hops. Citrusy and grassy. Very flavorful. The palate is very creamy, medium-bodied, perhaps a touch over-carbonated.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a nice tan head. Aroma of coffee, nuts, chocolate and plenty of malt! Medium to Full-bodied; Deep malty taste with nuts and some hops showing through. Aftertaste has some sugars and a little fruitiness - very well done. Overall, a very well balanced brown ale - worth trying if you are here in San Diego! I sampled this beer on draught at the Liar’s Club in San Diego, California on 23-September-2006.

Draft @ Alesmith. Pours a brownish-amber color; light tan head with good retention and lacing. Creamy, oily nut aroma; some chocolate and caramel. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: creamy nuttiness and toasty caramel; viscous; excellent chewiness and generosity for a brown ale; dried fruits and a slightest citrus on the mid-palate. Medium, nutty and creamy finish; excellent brown ale.
