Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

This beer rests in my glass with a thick tan head and a bright brown color. This beer has a subtle nutty aroma to it. There is a nice caramel malt sweetness here that is backed up by toasted malt flavors and a nuttiness that is found in the finish. This beer is packed with solid malt flavors that just jump out of my glass. This is one of the best Nut Brown ales that I have ever had, probably is the best. It is just so enjoyable and so well integrates.

This brown pours with a deep amber brown body topped by a medium thick off-white head with a good amount of lacing. The aroma is sweet and malty with nutty notes, a slight roastiness and a touch of fruit. The flavor is slightly sweet and malty with a roasted nut note, a hint of coffee and a nice hoppiness. It's medium bodied and smooth.

On tap at stone; poured a brownish color with off white head. Aroma was of toasted/roasted malt, caramel/toffee and chocolate. Flavor was about the same. Good for style, but not great overall.

Tap at Alesmith. Deep brown, nice head. Chocolate and coffee aroma. Flavor had a pronounced depth of malt flavor, with a focus on chocolate. Having said that, there was a dry finish to the beer. Easily one of the best brown ales out there. Alesmith dude (Brad?) described it as sort of a hybrid between a brown and a porter. Good stuff. Should make note of the small sample size. Unfortunately, not a bottled offering.

On draught at Liar’s in San Diego. I had smapled this at the brewery yesterday and enjoyed it greatly for the style. Roasty, milky, creamy aroma with slight smoked hints. Amber/copper color that’s transparent with a frothy light tan head and nice lacing. Smooth and roasty flavors to start with hints of chocolate with more roastinees. Mildly thin.
