Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

Growler: Bright reddish brown appearance, thick head formation. Malty, chocolaty caramel aroma. Rich chocolaty cocoa flavor with almond nutty balance. Mildly bitter in the finish. Full in flavor but fairly light in body.

Tap, The Local. Poured dark brown with ruby highlights. Sweet roasted malty aroma with some chocolate. Sweet chocolate cream flavor. Maybe a little bit of a vanilla flavor. Somewhat dessert like, but not overly sweet.

Thanks to Homerwantsbeer for sharing a growler. The beer pours a clear dark amber-brown color with a miniscule white head that disappears quickly. Spots and short strings on the glass. Equal parts fruit and malt in the nose. Medium, clean body with flavors of malt, caramel and sweet fruit, and a mildly hoppy undertone throughout. The finish is sweet chocolate malt with a fruity/nutty aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

The 2003 Version is here!!!! A lovely brown color with a light brown head that lasts and lasts. the flacor is nice and rasty and malty sweet. just a hint of hops in both the flavor and nose. the aroma has the roastiness featured quite well. this is a session beer if ever there was one. I felt a little weird ordering these ot O'Brien's, the land of IPAs, but i was glad to have it and cant wait to have some more.

Alesmith tap room. Clear dark brown, creamy tan head. Mostly nuts, chocolate, and a hint of coffee in the nose. Additional flavors of toasted caramel thrown in for good measure. Medium-bodied, livley carbonation, nutty dry finish. A great session ale!

Poured a clear dark brown with a short-lived, thin tan head. Aroma of nuts and malt. Flavor nutty, malty with a light hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Light vanilla and chocolate present as well. Moderate carbonation and a dry finish.

Sampled from draught at AleSmith Brewing Company.
Dark brown beer with an orange gleam and a fine light tan head. Mostly dark roasted malt and little spices in the aroma. Tones of bitter chocolate. Roasted malt in the flavor as well along with plenty of fruit (oranges) and light spices. Another tasty one from AleSmith!
