Commercial Description:
Nautical Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers' Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nautical Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

On draught @ Alesmith Brewing Company. Medium Brown. A great brown ale overall with a lovely aroma showing hints of toasty, roasty and caramel malts and a zesty, hearthy, rich and meaty malt accented flavor. Tasty.

Liquour-like Frangelico-type aroma, with wafting alcohol notes on a tone of nutty toast and malt. Dry. Heavy brown pour, with a nice creamy froth. A light and refreshing taste, however bold with quality hazlenut and tawny pale fruits to combine for a nice quality in a brown ale. Touches of saltiness in the nutty character. Both drinkable and full of distinction, yet having nice balance. Something that makes this top considering the quality of the body.

In short: Superior yet classic nutty Brown-Ale
How: Hand-bottled flip-top brought to Montreal by WeeHeavySD. Thanks Jon.
The look: Clear ruby brown body with a short-lived beige head (I’m sure a fresh pint on tap would have a good head retention)
In long: Very nutty on the note. Body felt rather full and presented flavours of toasted nuts, crisp caramel and toasted bread. Leafy hops were not very tasty and were happy just to do their balancing job without interfering with the malt flavours. The beer felt creamy yet crisp at the same time. The carbonation wasn’t very lively but that was to be expected with a days-old hand-bottled flip-top. Despite the hand-bottled this was one of the best session Brown Ale I’ve had so I can easily imagine how good a fresh pint from a tap must be. The bottle we drank was a 3.5 but because of the hand-bottled thing I’ll be as generous as an oil tycoon to a republican campaign.

Reddish brown, small white ahead. Some toasty, some nutty aromatics. Mellow toastiness with rich malt flavors, some bitterness especially noticale in the finish with some roast astringency. Mouthfeel is smooth and slightly dry.

On tap at the brewery. Thanks again guys. Pours nutty brown with a light white head. Kind of a nutty smell to it, some really light chocolate and dark malts. Its a brown ale, so it wont knock you off your feet, but overall a good representation of one. Semi-sweet malty taste mixed with light caramel and roasted nuts. Another good job buy a subperb brewery.

On tap @ Alesmith, RBSG. Dark amber color, moderately thick 1 cm head. Nutty aroma backed by earthy hops. Lightly hoppy, nice toasted malt finish. Light carbonation. A very nice brown, touched by enough hops to keep it from being boring.
