Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Old Numbskull is AleSmith’s first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so it's meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor.

75 cl bottle. Large creamy white head that mostly lasted. Cloudy amber color. Strong notes of sweet toasted malt and hoppy aroma. Grapefruit, citrus, mild bread. Full bodied, soft carbonation, thick texture. Heavy sweet and bitter flavor. Lingering bitter finish.

Amber with a long lasting off-white head. Aroma has caramel and toffee and grapefruity hops, and some alcohol. Sweet and hoppy flavour, warming vineous alcohol.

pours hazy and a copper-y shade of brown with a small dissipating almond tinted off white head. the aroma is quite woody and earthy with a bunch of hot spices and alcohol stinging the nose... vanilla, brown sugar, bitter roast, grass and lots of perfume-y flowers. the palate is very bitter... it actually seems a bit out of place. flavors of bitter cocoa, caramel, wood, ’british’ hops spices, orange and a soapy floral hop finish... ick! that soapiness is rude when this thing warms up. a medium body is not sticky (very important) but it is thick. the level of carbonation is perfect... very creamy and soft. the alcohol warms the belly nicely!

given the ratings this bottle must be transitioning between good ages for sampling because this is just a step up from ordinary (right now)... 7/3/7/4/15/3.6

One of my favorite beers to share. I usually introduce my friends to AleSmith with this and Speedway Stout, they always end up buying more.

Very nice looking out of the bottle. Deep apple cider color, hazy, rocky off-white head, nice lacing. Fruity aroma, also caramel, malt. Palate is rich, overripe dark fruit, some backbone, plenty of sweetness, some cloying and alcohol. Very nice blend, does not overwhelm. Aged somewhere between 6-9 months, from Columbus Wild Oats Natural Marketplace.
