Flavor is intensely sweet and malty, with a very nice subtle spicy hopped undertone. It’s no wonder the BA version of this is so popular. In fact, on first taste I was rather confused...after all there is a tremendous amount going on. After a second taste, a piercing malt begins to develop and define this beer’s persona. Although it initially has some bite, it gives way to a wonderful cream. Excellent chocolate palate that leaves me feeling like I just ate a piece of chocolate. If looks could kill, this beer would murder. My first impression was that of a cup of gourmet hot chocolate. One of my favorite barley wines to date. I would definitely try to find this beer again. It pours a rich foamy reddish but then fades to the most beautiful brown imaginable once the yeast settles in. Smells like malted chocolate. Tastes like happy but seriously this beer is incredible it makes me happy drinking it. The initial sip is almost a winey bite but its good and then once you get into the rest of the sip it fades to a creamy creamy wine taste. Although the aroma is malty the taste is surprisingly not so. The abv is barely noticeable. It’s very good. I would definitely buy this again fishingnet (1045), Brandon, Florida, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 25, 2008 Bottle. Pours deep amber with a decent tan head. Head slowly dissapates to a thin layer and very nice lacing. Aroma of resin and pine hops balanced well with caramel and some slight dark fruits. Lots of sweetness at first fading quickly to a long lasting bitterness. Glides down easy with moderate carbonation. I’ll probably get another to age for awhile. specksnreds (55), USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 7, 2008 Updated: Jan 31, 200903 bottle thanks to moejuck, thanks Joe! Poured a deep garnett color with a thin off-white head that faded to a ring. Aroma of moderate sweet caramel malt, some oxidization, and a light cardboard hop bitterness. Smooth, clean entry with hints of oxidized hops and caramel malt with undertones of light fruitiness and a drying finish. Moderate bite on the palater and a nice drying finish. Perhaps a bit unfair to rate this beer because it was rather oxidized, I will have to re-rate when I get my hands on another bottle. Regardless, thanks a ton Joe, you the man!
