Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Old Numbskull is AleSmith’s first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so it's meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor.

1999 - waxed cap
2000 - dated as such. Pictured at left

Bottle: Hazy copper brown with a thick, creamy beige head. Thick lacing. Aroma is malty, caramels, fruity, citrus, and a touch bready. Flavor is smooth and mellow. This was a 2006 bottle enjoyed 1.5 years cellared. Creamy and rich feel with plenty of citrus and caramel sweetness. A nice amount of dark fruits with a light vinous quality. Succulent comes to mind. Thanks to dirty_martini for sending this in trade.

750 ml bottle: Pours amber with a small head. Appears to be very thick, almost like honey. Flavor of hops and caramel. Very good. This was difficult to drink by myself.

Pours brown with thick tan head. Aroma of caramel and toffee. Taste of thick caramel, light hops, and a ton of malt. Very, very, good. Nice thick mouthfeel. Alcohol was not that present as expected. Good representation of English BW.

Good amber color. Creamy hops smell. Higher carbonation than I expected. Nice balanced hops and malt and caramel flavor. Not bold or big or heavy on the obvious alcohol - but rather it is nice and mild and balanced. A good brew.

Bottle shared by MiguelMandingo. Thanks!
Pours dark caramel maroon colored and opaque. Smell is hoppy, warm caramelly with a touch spicy cinnamon. Taste is similar with warm, toasty, spicy hoppy caramel and cinnamon like malt and balancing hops. Very drinkable for a big barley wine. Great beer all around.

Bottle. Pours fall brown with off white head. Good flavor of sweet honey, carmel, but overly hopped for my tastes. I keep tasting a bitter hopped finish but some tasty etoh in the finish.

(Rating #1667)
