Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Old Numbskull is AleSmith’s first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so it's meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor.

Thanks to Sparky27 for sending this beer my way! Bottle 2007. Perfect dark amber color. Good head. Aroma is sweet fruits. Taste was SWEET brown sugar, fruits, light hops and a nice malt touch. Thick in texture, syrup like. Low in carbonation. Another great brew by Alesmith and an awesome Barleywine. Thanks again Eric for the brew!

Deep brown.. chestnut is a good choice for color (like Beershine says). Good sized light beige head. Pretty sticky too. Aroma is dense and pungent. Brandy soaked apples, figs, and pears. Caramelized brown sugar, clover honey, sticky buns and fiery ethanol. Flavor is explosive and just fantastic. More of the same on the palate. Good, thick, sweet, malty body. Hops and wood more evident on the finish. Very nice.

So I went to a party tonight to celebrate my sister’s graduation from college. Her boyfriend is a Mich Ultra drinker, so I told him I was bringing a real beer with me to toast my sister’s accomplishment. After knocking back a Bud Light Lime and a Miller Chill that I found in the cooler upon my arrival I peeled back the foil and popped the top on this brew. The pour was a rich brown color with some lighter copper highlights. The head was dense, off-white and provided good, call it above average lacing. The aroma was malt, toffee/caramel and figs. A bit of light citrusy hops chimed in as well. Lots of sweet malt and dried fruits in the flavor. The hops try and assert themselves but are overwhelmed by the malt and fruit. The mouthfeel is thick and full. A very enjoyable beer that was a much better ending to the evening than the beginning.

Pours a deep coppery brown with an impressive 2-finger fluffy off-white head. Retention was surprisingly good leaving some serious lacing. Aroma starts off with a blast of sugary malts with strong caramel and toffee notes. Hops were there as well but more on the resiny side than than the fruity. Probably the best aroma of any BW I’ve had. Toffee and caramel are the most dominant flavors with the strong malt backbone. Aftertaste was actually a little bitter with the hops sneaking in at the end. Fairly heavy, syrupy mouthfeel with decent carbonation and the aforementioned piny hop aftertaste. A very solid (and slightly hopped up) representation of an English BW. I would certainly seek this out again.

2005 bottle shared with Lee and Aaron to celebrate the NFL draft. Pours a cloudy amber with a thin white head. Aroma is very big barley wine, with a huge malt bill and lots of bitter hops. There is a real balance in the hops and malt, leading me to believe that the age has mellowed this a bit. Taste is spicy bitter hops that are really complemented by the big sweet malt. Finishes with a big spicy hop finish. Delish!!

Shared bottle at DLD 08. Pours Reddish brown with an off-white head. Aroma is caramel, malt and brown suger. Finishes with light alcohol burn. I think it was an older bottle and alittle past its prime but still very good stuff.

Draught at brewery. Warm chestnut/auburn brown with off-white head. Estery hop aroma with minerals detectable. Alcohol is detectable too, mostly in the flavors, but it’s not a hot one. This is balanced, masculine, and smooth with little to argue about or with.

Bottle shared at DLD. Nice thick pour with a lot of brown sugar instantly in the nose. More sugar and citrus in the taste, but even among all the alcohol it presents, its a pretty easy drinking brew. I was very surprised by how quick my glass emptied, thankfully its such a big bottle :)
