Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Old Numbskull is AleSmith’s first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so it's meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor.

Bottle. Rich, oily, sweet, malty and hoppy aroma. Sweet and sticky caramel malt. Dried fruit: raisins and plums.A good amount of pine and citrus hops with a hint of alcohol as well. Pours rich, cloudy amber with a big, creamy, frothy head with excellent sticky-icky lacing. Excellent balance on the palate. Loads of rich, sticky malt with tons of dry and zesty hops. Mostly full bodied and creamy. Finishes with a wicked hop zing that lasts forever.

bottle with a big thanks to dsnowden: #300 pours a beautiful cinnamon brown with red hues gleaming thru with a reamy off white head that is thisk and with standing, great lacing to start. aroma oh the aroma starts with a great earthy sweet hops that just floats into the nasal cavity not overpowering it at all, almost relaxing in a way. this melds into a wonderous sweet caramel malt with hints of sugars and grains. with warnth i get great dried fruits of figs, dates and raisins. only seems to be gettting better. flavour is a great mix of the malt and hops. the malts are sweet and sticky with a great flavours of caramel infused with some burnt sugars and a slight yeast spice. this finishes in a great dry bitter with a slight alcohol breadiness. i took th emost time ever to rate and it was very worth it. a great barley wine and drinking experience.betterthan i imagined.

Pours a deep ruby color. Aroma of passion fruits and ethanol. Sweet with some stickiness up front. luscious malts, caramel, light toffee fading to mango, passion fruit and ending in an assertive lingering bitterness.

Didn’t really stound out a lot for me as a BW, which is a bit of a surprise, and a disappointment in terms of $11 for a bomber. I can’t do much of a descriptive critique, because it sums up just about anything you’d expect to get in a standard BW. Maybe a bit more of a mellow, bready finish than usual.

750 ml bottle. Pours a amber orange with a beige head that lasts through most of the sitting. Aroma is quite abundant. Caramelized, dough, grapefruit, oranges, touch of alcohol and a touch of cherries. Flavor matches the nose with thick malts layered in grapefruit, oranges, caramels, dough, and a malt sweetness that is nice but not overdone with a touch of alcohol warmth. Creamy balanced, delicious. Wow I now have a huge desire to try this from a Bourbon barrel.

Thanks Holdenn for sharing this fine brew with me. Bottle from unknown vintage, though probably ’06 or ’07. Hazy orange with medium beige head. Aroma is grapefruit and big malt aroma, caramel and alc are present but not too much a little dough rounds out this beer as well. Flavor is very flavorful grapefruit/citrus hop bitterness with a nice malt sweetness to balance it out, dough also is very asseritive. Medium to full body that is well carbonated, leads to creamy settle. Overall a very well balanced big beer. Thanks Matt!!!!

2007 bottle. Pours a deep orange with medium tan head. Soem aroma of citrus and alcohol, but mostly sweet and malty. Assertive bitterness, a bit hot, sweet. This beer needs more time in the bottle.

Poured amber with fluffy off white head. Aroma of sweet malt, fruit, and candy. Very heavy brew. Good sweet malt character with some fruit hints.
