Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Old Numbskull is AleSmith’s first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so it's meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor.

2006 750ml bottle, pours a clear dark amber with ruby highlights and an ample frothy tan head, good lacing. Captivating aroma of sweet malts, caramel, vanilla, and candied dark fruits. Taste supports the aroma nicely, with mild carmely sweetness followed by the slightest hoppy finish. Palate is full and creamy, smooth and medium-full mouthfeel, with a slightly lingering and mellow finish. As expected from AleSmith, this is one fine barleywine, and will be fun to try again with some more age on it for additional mellowing...

2004, 750ml bottle. Pours a translucent, copper/caramel colored amber with a zero head. Smells of candy, medicine, malt and ethanol. Flavor is caramel, candy, vanilla, whiskey, wood, citrus. The finish is where this beer kicks it up, the heavy alcohol first hits the tongue and warms the mouth. The bitterness from the hops then takes over, tingling the mouth and tongue. The description says they intended to make you smile, certainly did the trick.

Thanks to Naven for the bottle. Dark reddish color. Smell of dark fruit, minor coco, hops, malt, rasins, caramel, nuts, alcohol, toffee and spice. Tastes the same but with more chocolate and hops. Winderful barleywine.

2006 bottle. Caramel color with absolutely no head. Very nice, subtle toffee aroma with some tobacco and graham crackers. Taste is lots of bitter hops and a good amount of fusel alcohol along with some dark fruits. You can taste the alcohol for sure, but fairly in check for 10%.

Definitly on the hop side of the BW specturm. Delicious and complex fruitiness with tons of citrus hop. A little disappointing in the mouthfeel but than again there is nothing cloying about this. As a matter of fact this may be dangerously drinkable.

750ml bottle. Pours a murky amber, little head, and large slow moving bubbles. Aroma is just as complex as the flavor. fruity, sweet caramel notes, and yes even a cinnamon roll. Flavor is delightful, woody, candy, hoppy, just the right balance. Nice long dry finish, with a medium to full body. This is an awesome BW, so many out there are just to harsh. Old Numbskull is smooth and relaxing.
