Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Old Numbskull is AleSmith’s first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so it's meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor.

Well I guess I’m not copying OG. Pours a cloudy amber with a good sized head. Nice aroma, fruit, mostly cherry, caramel, and candy aroma as well. Nice sweetness, not overly bitter like some barley wines. Didn’t really notice the alcohol. Thanks for sharing!

750 ml bottle purchased from the brewery (3/06) - Pours a cloudy amber color with a thin, big bubbled off white head. No lacing. Aroma is toasted malt and lots of esters. Flavor is esters, caramel malt, and slight alcohol. Palate is a little flat, slightly dry and bitter. Medium to full body. Alcohol is noticeable in the finish. I had this on tap at the brewery last Sept. and thought it was a little better then. Still a very nice BW.

Bottle courtesy of JCB (thanks!). Poured a really dark reddish-brown color with slight off-white head. The aroma was all fruity/candy sweetness and booze...I guess this has mellowed out some. Upon tasting, I get all malt to start, with dark fruits being the predominant taste, though it was tough for me to pinpoint anything specifically. The finish was sweet and boozy, with the latter being predominant after swallowing. The hops definitely faded in this one. I wonder how this tastes fresh. Still, a solid beer nonetheless and glad I got the chance to try it, though I recommend sharing it with a friend or several.

2004. This is one of those beers. A beer that I can sit back with, close my eyes, take a long draw from the glass and effortlessly float away, even if I’m in a crowded room. Clouded mahogany body looks like liquified, split wood, with swirling copper hues and ruby glints that could light up a dark corner of a bar. A thick tan head is resistant to dispersion and eventually leaves behind thick drooping lace. Gorgeous and teeming with energy. The aroma blends notes of toffee and caramel into a rich melange of candy, sticking to the teeth long before the first sip. Scents of aged wet hops, honeycomb, heavily toasted malts, apricots, dates, oranges, rum, alcohol and leather. Outstanding. The flavor is almost as rewarding and substantially different too. Intense hop bitterness is still prevalent, sweetness levels are moderate to high. Caramel and woody, toasty grains dominate, followed closely by fruit, then hops. The finish is sweet, then rapidly drying, very long and elegant. Mouthfeel is full bodied, rich and silky, with ample carbonation. A delight to sip on, especially the palate. A tremendous dessert beer.

750 ml bottle. This is from the new 2007 batch of old numbskull. Pours an unfiltered cloudy dark brown with a good tan head that disapates just a bit too soon. Aroma is sweet malts, caramels, and molasses. Flavor is the same but with some added pronounced hops. Smooth, creamy, satisfying mouth-feel. Finishes long and clean. Overall: a great barley wine. Recommended.

Pours a murky amber/brown color with a small cream head. Aroma is of cherries, blackberries, candied sugar, caramel, malt and a hint of mild hops. Creamy, full mouth feel with tastes of dark malts, caramel, and some banana. Very good barley wine, one of the best I’ve had.

Bought 11/25/06. Pours tawny red/orange with absolutely no head. Aroma of apples and alcohol. Huge malt profile, caramel sweetness, retronasal brings lightly toasted grainy notes, light warming alcohol kick on the finish. Hop character is very understated. Definitely not a "hop-forward" barley wine a la SN Bigfoot. Low carbonation but not completely absent. Big body, almost syrupy. Very smooth. Too one-dimensional, but sure is tasty! (Though too sweet after 750ml) Fun to watch how your sobriety steadily melts away with each gulp.
