Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Old Numbskull is AleSmith’s first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so it's meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor.

Aroma of malt and caramel. Pour was a dark brown with a nice 1 finger off white head. Tastes of alcohol, malt and molasses. Mouthfeel is a little thinner than most barley wines I’ve had but that’s a good thing. This has been aging about a year so there are some stronger malt notes present and the hops are coming through in the aftertaste. Most barley wines are too strong and alcoholic fresh. I’m glad that I cellared this for a bit

growler- dark brown amber, not that much carbonation or head. A lot of fruits, cherries, grapes, and some serious malt sweetness, caramel, candy sugar. super sweet and really smooth. Wow.

Huge thanks to jonboy for sharing this one with all of us at the Orlando gathering.

Pours a dark plum body with a khaki colored head. Aromas of plums, malts, sugar, caramel, candied sugar. Flavor is very sweet, with malts dominating. Palate is sticky, lightly astringent. FInish is sweet, and the hops come into the mix at this point. Warming at the end and throughout the fnish.

Pours a dark reddish color. Has some lacing. Has heavy hints of molasses, caramel, wood, malts, hops. Finishes with a thick molasses and hop taste on the tongue.

My liver hurts and I am now moving to San Diego. I might even sell my soul for more Ale Smith beers.

Starts with a standard barleywine aroma, sweet, with hints of fruit. I also noticed a hint of tannin lurking behind the sugary aroma. The beer itself is beautiful, it pours a dark amber so cloudy that you cannot see through it, with about a nice tight white head that leaves amazing lacing. Nice thick mouthfeel to it, with hints of sugar and dried fruits, with a long finish. The alcohol is hidden, but it can still be noticed. Overall, a really good Barleywine that I’m hoping to be able to snag a couple more bottles to cellar.

Had at AleSmith brewery. Excellent name for this brew. Excellent barley wine, thick, poured a deep orange, full of flavor, alcohol very well hidden, very well balanced brew, your skull will get numb after 750mL

clody dark amber color. smells of hops and raisins. tastes more like an IPA than a barleywine and i’m sure not complaining about that. i wouldn’t mind getting my hands on a full bottle of this puppy.
