Nose is malty, but not overpowering, herbal, slightly floral, and I think I’m detecting a hint of aspirin. Low carbonation, a little sticky and a bit creamy. Fruity leather, toasty malt, and significant floral hops. Lacking a really huge caramel element like I enjoy in a barleywine, but not bad otherwise. I wish I had another bottle to age, but I’d rather pick this up at a lower price... Juelze (901), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 29, 2007 2006 bottle, trade from Ogglethorp, thanks Brian! Pours a hazy and rich mahogony color with off-white head that fades quickly. Aroma is...whoa...that’s one frickin’ agressive aroma and is actually a bit off-putting to me. Aroma is an intense caramel, dark fruit, and alcohol, not too appealing for me. However, as soon as it hits room temp it’s not as devastating to the ol’ nostrils. Taste is a lot easier on the senses with a a nice surge of caramel, dark fruit, and again an abundance of alcohol. With this beer being so right in your face it finishes pretty smooth while revealing some nice hopiness and some light cocoa and some slight cherry as well. Didn’t quite live up to the hype but I’d drink it again if I was offered it. Hopefully some aging would drown out the alcohol a bit more as I’ve had higher abv beers with less alcohol presence then this. RichJ7 (1175), Cullman, Alabama, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 27, 2007 Pours a dark, coppery amber with a small off-white head. Far more hops than I expected in the nose, some fruit and caramel. Sweet malty flavor, more caramel up front with a fairly aggressive hop presence that fades into a lingering bittersweetness. Excellent. BeerVirgin72 (778), Pataskala, Ohio, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 24, 2007 Poured a beautiful dark amber with slight tan head. Smelled like sweet raisins and plums...The taste was just slightly sweet fruit, thick, plums, brown sugar and honey...Very hearty taste. Hoppy finish which blended very well...Not too sweet, not too dry...VERY VERY tasty...My favorite so far, I think...Like previous rater, I tried to sip it, but it was so darn good, I ended up downing it...The alcohol is very well hidden. nightrider (373), encinitas, California, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 23, 2007 Poured fom the bottle the appearance was a deep reddish hue along a brownish quality. The head was small and nice. The aroma was delicious with caramel, , anise, and hints of alcohol. The flavor is deep and rich with much malt sweetness and well interspersed hops. The finish is smooth as silk. A first rate beer no doubt! kramer (2465), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 20, 2007 25 oz bottle, acquired in 2005, via a long ago trader. Pours a slightly hazy dark orangish copper colored body under a small tight bubbled off-white head that ran to a thin ring. The nose is heavy toffee and sweet caramel malt with lots of balancing hoppiness. A little alcohol, but not much for a 10% beer. Pretty well balanced flavor, for all that malt there’s pretty minimal sweetness thankfully. Nicely balanced with lots of bitterness on the finish. Surprisingly well hidden alcohol. Some notes of brown sugar. Mouthfeel is thick and full bodied but never sticky or cloying. Nice moderate slightly fizzy carbonation. This is the finest crafted Barleywine I’ve ever had. My second highest rated, but my first is Midnight Sun M, which is really a whole different animal. This was just so incredibly drinkable it went down faster than any other 10% beer I’ve had. I really tried to sip it but I just kept taking big gulps. JJClark (545), Roscoe, Illinois, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 19, 2007 Bottle from trade with Odeed. Thanks man! Pours a dark amber color with a decent off white head. Aroma of pine and citrus. Hops dominate the nose. Taste is semi sweet and malty. Nicely balanced with a bit of fruity finish. Good and easy to drink. beerbill (1947), Laurel, New York, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 17, 2007 750 ml bottle thanks to a trade with awaisanen. Pours a lovely warm rust color with a moderate linen white head and very nice lacing. Very pleasant aroma of malt, dates and brown sugar. The flavor follows the aroma quite well. Moderate hops bitterness at the finish is well proportioned to the malt. Warming alcohol but by no means excessive, especially given the 10% ABV. Maybe a touch lighter in viscocity than I expected in a barley wine, but that is very minor. Overall, really, really good stuff.
