Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Old Numbskull is AleSmith’s first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so it's meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor.

Pretty much unaged. This beer was the barley wine version of what alesmith does. They seem to make concentrated beer, and this was no exception. I am used to barleywines being sweeter, but this is great right from the beginning. Very warm also. Almost like an IPA of Barley Wines.

Aged 1 year. Pours clear dark amber into a snifter. Citrus and caramel aromas. Creamy dark caramel and vanilla and an alcohol warmth spreads down the throat. A chewy, lasting balanced sweet/hop finish.

draft at najas - my tastebuds may have been influenced by the IIPA i had previously...but the maltiness of this way fantastic. the more i drank it the more the hops came through. the hops werent there to add any bitterness, but simply to balance out the caramel malt, maple syrup and maybe brown sugar that the malts were providing. does alesmtih make a bad beer??

750mL bottle. Pours a hazy, orangish-amber color; off-white head with decent lacing. Chewy, wet-malt aroma: maple syrup and brown sugar. Full chewy mouthfeel: plenty of candy and brown sugar; grapefruit and citrus hops; well-balanced and dense. Long, chewy, vanilla and candy sugar finish.
