Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Old Numbskull is AleSmith’s first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so it's meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor.

Bottle cork & wire 2003: Pours a hazy orangey amber with an off white film for head; nice clarity. Aroma is chewy chocolatey malts, hints of spices: cinnamon, clove and mint. The flavor is nicely malty, but not as thick in body as I expected. Some spicy chocolatey notes. There’s residual peppery spicyness: cinnamon, mint leaves, gingery, light orange peel and a ton of alcohol. Solid profile, yet not too standout. Maybe needs some more age. I’ll re-visit this one.

Dark chocolatey malt. Smooth and candy-like. Plenty of hops rounding out the back, but no distinct flavor shows itself. Sweet, some balancing bitterness. Middle of the road American barleywine. Probably suffers from juxtaposition with the HOTD Fred, which I just drank.

2003 vintage. Pours a fairly thick and viscous consistency. Reveals a slightly hazy amber-burgundy color supporting a tight, dense bone-white head which gradually fades to a spotty film. No lacing noted. A rich, beautiful bouquet of hot melted caramel candy, fresh cookie dough and chocolate malt balls combined with a respectable hop contribution of grapefruit, tangerine and pine needle. For a west coast product you can surmise from the aroma profile this is not an overwheling "hop-bomb" as are many other Barley Wines from this area. Mouthfeel is just perfect for this style; thick, chewy, oily with a minimum amount of carbonation to keep it silky smooth. Flavor profile is admirably balanced between the malts and hops. Lots of Sugar Daddy caramel candy sweetness with some toasty malts all balanced nicely with a citrus/piney hop bitterness to even it all out. The 10% abv is not in the least obtrusive, barely making its presence known. One of the best balanced west coast Barley Wines I’ve had the pleasure to sample.

Bottle - 2004: Dark clear copper with not much head. This is interesting in light of the fact that many of the other ratings report medium to large heads!?! The aroma is dominated by hops and alcohol accompanied by oak, bread, peaches, light berries and raisins. Other flavors beside the rich hops were Sheepherder’s Bread from Bishop, CA and brown mustard. The feel is thick and syrupy with a strong bitter aftertaste. This brew aged quite well and I think it could have even been better a year later . . . This was the last to go from my Secret Santa in July 06! Thanks man!

2004 bottle. Pours a beautiful amber with a huge head. Smells of fruit all the way, mostly plums and malt. Taste of hops and more fruit. The flavors became more dominant as it warms. Alcohol was well hidden. Very smooth finish

750 courtesy of FlacoAlto! Thanks! Pours an amber with a big creamy beige head. Dark fruits, caramel, and hoppy smell. Taste is delicious, very smooth unlike a lot of barley wines i’ve had, alcohol hidden very well, and not over hopped. Slight bitterness, overall a great barleywine.
