Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Old Numbskull is AleSmith’s first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so it's meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor.

Have had bottles before, all great. This note is from draft at the brewery from a super fresh batch. Hop bomb! Wow. Totally not what I expected. The beer was so fresh it was extremely green pine hoppy. Very interesting. Guessing bottles were still fermenting and carbinating from this batch it was so new. Very refreshing and super easy to drink 10% beer. Fun to try but I prefer bottles of this and with a year or more of age they get better and better.

[Bottle, thanks Guerde!] Pours hazy reddish-amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is vanilla, nuttiness, marshmallow, big strawberry jam out of the snifter, marshmallow, faint lemon and black pepper when warmer. Taste is pretty hot, with a good deal of caramel, some malt towards the end, and a bit of grapefruit rind bitterness. Very nice mouthfeel--creamy, thick, long finish. Overall a very good barley wine that is much better than the bourbon barrel version.

(bottle from Sparky27) Pours a hazy amber with a thin white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is just magnificent, and is everything I look for in a barleywine. Smells of strawberry jam, candied nuts, toffee, vanilla, raisin, and creme brulee as well. The smell constantly morphs between fruit, nuts, and vanilla. Taste is a good fusion of caramel, peanuts, a bit of bitter hops, and some toffee as well. There’s a bit of raisin here also. Undertones of other fruits are present, but it’s difficult to pinpoint these down. Mouthfeel is medium, and carbonation is spot-on. In my opinion, this is worthy of being named as a classic in the barleywine style. Thanks Eric!

25.4 oz bottle. Pours a crazy-beautiful ruby-russet with ample foam. Aromas are hard to place, hops, honey, toastedness, and maybe some fruits, though, as usual, I can’t really tell, stupid nose! Flavors assault the mouth and tongue. Full fruitiness, maybe peaches and tart cherries? Pine and toasty flavor complement the sweet honey. This is really a wonderful brew. Sad to only have the one bottle. Mouthfeel is bubbly and thick, with an excellent lasting texture as it warmly glides down the gullet. Love it!

On tap at the AleSmith tap room in San Diego. Pours a hazy, lighter red-orange body with a thin, off-white head that dissipates into a precious swirl on the surface with soft lacing on the glass. Aroma is lively. Lots of strong and dense hops, but lots of sweet caramels as well. A bit of a sweeter honey to go along with the floral citrus. Some dried fruits, toasted cookies, and a touch of peppery booze. Flavor is more of the same. Starts strong and ends strong. Lots of citrus up front as well as chewy caramels. Moves into more of a fig middle where an earthy bitterness comes in. Finishes with a licorice spice and lots of aromatic hop bitterness, but also a lighter sweetness probably coming from the honey. Lingers with a sweet malt, piney citrus, spiced fig, and a hint of booze. Palate is medium bodied and slick with a dry finish. Overall, a very nice barley wine. Lots of good things going on here. I like the little extra spice in the finish and the medium body really fits. Solid stuff.

750ml champagne bottle (as pictured). Certainly complex and pleasing to the nose on opening...promises all kinds of layers. This bottle has been aging in my cellar for about 3 years and came via L.A. when I was working there. Pours a very dark brown, opaque, slightly cloudy with no carbonation and almost no head. Powerful malt and dried fruit taste with a lingering hop bite at the finish. Alcohol still fairly evident (wouldn’t have enjoyed this as much if opened soon after it was bought) but it was pleasant and not overwhelming. Probably would’ve been better in a few more years (but who can wait more that 3?). Excellent, on style and very much worth the wait.
