Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Old Numbskull is AleSmith’s first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so it's meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor.

Capped 750, thanks to after4ever. Pours a clear dark copper with no head. Nutty caramel and fig aroma. Full body, fine carbonation. Sweet taste of brown sugar, toasted almonds, leather, tea. Woody and nicely bittered finish.

Bottle. Poured a cloudy brown color with a thin brownish head. Aroma of fruit and hops with caramel malt. Flavor had chocolate hints, with honey and a hoppy finish. Full body with mild carbonation.

2005 Bottle shared by illinismitty. Poured a hazy brown with an off-white head that left a thin layer lasting and light lacing. Nice hoppy and fruit aroma with a caramel malt backing. Chocolate flavor at first but slides to a hoppier flavor as warms. Medium to full body, slightly chalky, starts sweet but ends bitter. Very good!

Pours with a hazy/marky amber hue which sits below a small off white head that is mostly diminishing after a few moments. Aroma is of sweet malt, dark fruits, and some strawberries. I smell hints of honey and caramel as well. Flavor is of candy, honey, and of bitterness. The bitterness is pretty strong. Sweet beginning followed by a pretty strong bitter ending. Syrupy texture with light carbonation. I feel that it was overly bitter. Would have tasted better had it been toned down a tad bit. Not bad nonetheless.

2005 bottle courtesy of Zug4abby. Pours a murky amber orange with an off white head. This still has a nice nose of fruity ale esters, sugary malt, and cherry. Full bodied with a rich, somewhat chewy texture. Nice mouthfeel. Flavor of caramel, toffee candy, dark honey, and a very subtle smoke phenol countered by a very subdued hop bitterness (due to the room temp cellaring). The attenuation is nice, sweet without going over the top (like Avery). Warming finish without the booziness. Solid beer, but perhaps I sat on this a tad too long. I need to quite cellaring shit and just drink it. I bet this is even better fresh.
