sfontain (500), Columbus, Ohio, USA Dec 24, 2005 750 mL bottle from The Andersons, purchased in July 2005 and left out at high room temperature since then; many thanks to Lauren. Pours a thick black, but not as thick as expected; nice, full, dark brown head that isn’t easy to revive once it’s gone. Aroma is heavy, with coffee and chocolate; some vanilla and extremely subdued caramel. Flavor is very, very strong; coffee but not overly so; chocolate; very hoppy finish. Very thick and very chewy; slightly too sticky. Impressively, I’ve had 8% abv beers that went down harder than this 12% abv beer; the alcohol is astonishingly well hidden. I drank this entire bottle myself and I must admit that I’m fairly hammered. Nonetheless, there are other stouts and porters that I prefer to this, and this is a slightly overrated beer. Still, very good.
Moosington (15), Costa Mesa, California, USA Oct 11, 2008 750 at room temp. Oil black pour with similar viscosity (overstating a bit to be sure). Thin head with staying power on the edges and light lacing. Tons of smoke, chocolate and coffee in the nose, with obvious malt. Coffee dominates the flavor with a smoked chocolate finish, alcohol is very well masked, but it’s definitely there. Drank with a nice steak and it was phenomenal. BREWMUSKCLES (798), WEEHAWKEN, New Jersey, USA Oct 11, 2008 nice and strong and warm alcohol presence combined with a malty and smooth coffee taste. toasted sweet caramel flavors balanced with deep chocolate. pitch black and toasted head the brew is complex with a wonderfully full body. a real treat! description is to be believed. mmm///beer (578), Austin, Texas, USA Oct 10, 2008 2008 750 mL bottle in trade from Snojerk321- the man with more hookups in SD than a dozen pimps!!! Served in tulip as suggested on the bottle- with so many things going on right now for me, I figured it to be an opportune time to crack this puppy open! Poured blacker than the abyss of outer space, foamy dark tan with shades of brown one finger thick formed and left bubbles on the side of the glass. Huge aroma of coffee, dark roasted malt, dark bakers chocolate, and old fashioned beer awesomeness. Hits the mouth with a body wide enough to drive a Kenworth through easily, malt is highly enjoyable, hearty coffee with notes of caramel and cream in the middle, finish is lasting and has enjoyable warming experience. Not as good as my personal fav, but still hits a 10 on my awesome meter!!! AskForJenny (447), Ontario, New York, USA Oct 8, 2008 0.75l - Smoky, cocoa nose, thin tan head, some lacing. Creamy, milky stout, then mint, then some smoky hops. Good not great. dogfish120love (78), west hartford, Connecticut, USA Oct 5, 2008 Poured black with a thick rocky 3 finger head that is burnt sugar at first then tan in color. Aroma is over poweringly coffee and chocolate, which dominate any other aroma. The tase is magnificant, huge chocolate and cofee flavors, combined with alcohol. The coffee and chocolate seem to mask the high ABV. This is the best beer I have ever had it is official.
