Very pleasant coffee and vanilla aroma. Slight ethanol contribution but muted given the ABV. Very roasty, toasted malt flavor, replete with coffee. Sinuous, slightly oily and lightly bitter finish, lingering dark chocolate. Not as sweet and thick as you’d expect from a beer this large. Very nice.

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 22, 2009 Poured a nice dark black with mild carbonation. It had a strong coffee taste with hints of floral and citrus a very smooth taste and the alcohol is well hidden. A must try highly recommended. cking (1041), North Canton, Ohio, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Dec 17, 2009 At last some Speedway has found it’s way into my glass. While enjoying this stout I realized I wasn’t really blown away by any one thing, and soon understood that what makes this great is simply how well it’s made. Opaque dark, rich brown body with a diminishing medium brown head and streaky/spotty lacing. Coffee and chocolate aromas dominated by burnt, roasted malts. Exceptional feeling from this beer, drinkable and approachable. Very smooth with a nice dry finish. Flavors mirror the robust aromas. Standard Imperial Stout qualities with an over abundance of quality coffee. SpencerDB (99), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 14, 2009 Sampled this standing out in the cold at the ORF release thanks to kp. It was more like smelling my morning coffee than a pungent 12% imperial stout. Poured pitch black with little head. Aroma had mostly coffee with a small amount of the dark chocolate malt. Taste was overpoweringly coffee to the point that my palate was shot for the day. Couldn’t taste anything but coffee for the next hour. Definitely complex and nice to drink if that’s all you’re going to be drinking for the day. Too in-your-face for me. Would have like a bit more drinkability instead of one sided coffee. jstraw (774), Chicago, Illinois, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 13, 2009 Shared 750mL bottle. Thanks Dan for tracking this one down! Pours black with lasting tan head. Nose very coffee. Taste of more coffee, not too sweet. Notes of bitter chocolate, liquorice, with nice bitter finish. Great beer! Pipper (258), Ohio, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 11, 2009 The pour on this was straight-up gorgeous -- like a prettier and immediate version of the Guinness-cascade with dark red around the edges. Dark brown/black with an aggressive dark coffee head. You definitely get the coffee in the taste and flavor, the rest and dark, sticky fruits like some boozy dates/figs. Slick over the palate but not too coating with a bit of coffee aftertaste. Awesome beer from Alesmith. cmonster (113), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 6, 2009 Saved this one for my 100th Rating. 750 served in a snifter. Shortish dark tan head sits atop a coffee colored body. Aroma is roasty and toasty coffee, and dark chocolate with some caramel-molasses sweetness. Also has a doughy quality and even some hints of pit fruit and vanilla. Full bodied, very thick and creamy mouthfeel. Flavor is coffee, roasted malts, caramel and resiny hops which linger on the bitter finish. The big alcohol is cleverly concealed. I’m not giving this my highest rating, but its certainly a top-notch concoction. I will see how this develops as I empty the bottle. I imagine the barrel aged version would be amazing. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 5, 2009 Shared Bottle, 2009. Nearly black with a cappuccino head. Wonderful chocolate and malt smell with slight vanilla notes. Smooth and full taste. Taste begins with roasted malt, moves to coffee and ends with a bitter dark chocolate. Great beer I hope to get more of.
