750ml bottle from south bay for rating #350! pours a beautiful, oil-slick, black with a big, fluffy, dark beige head and amazing lacing. aroma is wonderfully rich with huge, dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, massive toffee notes, with hints of marshmallow, toasted coconut, dark fruits, and mild, woody bourbon. flavor is simply outstanding with fresh, dark roasted coffee, espresso beans, and pure, bitter cacao chocolate notes up front joined seamlessly by big flavors of caramel, toffee, and roasted nuts with hints of fig, raisin, vanilla, and charred wood rounding out the sip and leading to an epic, roasted coffee and toasted caramel finish with a hint of warming alcohol. palate is truly full bodied, thick and viscous, but amazingly drinkable. overall, a absolute marvel of a beer.

Dec 5, 2009 Shared Bottle, 2009. Nearly black with a cappuccino head. Wonderful chocolate and malt smell with slight vanilla notes. Smooth and full taste. Taste begins with roasted malt, moves to coffee and ends with a bitter dark chocolate. Great beer I hope to get more of.

Dec 1, 2009 Aroma of figs and raisins, with a heavily roasted undertone, smoke, licorice. Pour is brown-black with a sticky tan head. Flavor has lots of dark fruits to it, cherry pits, more figs, floating above a dark chocolate malt base whose sweet spices (licorice, etc.) meld nicely with the alcohol heat. Full bodied, warm and lively on the palate. A very nice impy.

Dec 1, 2009 Bottle Courtesy of Senor Wambolt: Pour is ink black, with burnt toast head. Head dissipates quickly, no surprise, but laces beautifully. Nose is definitely a JAVA blast, but I also picked up sweet fruits (like dark cherries or maybe plum). Flavor is dark roast dominated, with the uber coffee tone. As it warms to proper temp, I pick up faint vanilla and brown sugar hints. But this is definitely a coffee bomb. The malts are bitter, but not astringent. The alcohol is noticeable, but only slightly so. Mouthfeel is full bodied with a nice dry finish. The finish lingers... and here you can pick up some of the more subtle characteristics. Overall a very drinkable & tasty imperial... maybe too much so.

Nov 27, 2009 750ml bottle served in a snifter. Poured a deep brown/black with some red highlights. Sparse tan head. Chocolate in the aroma along with a bit of sourness that had me worried. Also thought I detected some cinnamon. Full bodied, rich and smooth. Roasted malt predominates, not as much coffee as I would suspect. Fair amount of hop bitterness to balance the malt. Long dry malt finish. Also some alcohol in the finish. Not a lot of carbonation.

Nov 24, 2009 Bottled 750ml. -from City Beer Store, San Francisco. Black coloured, medium sized brown head, dry coffee nose with touch of chocolate. Roasted malts, dark chocolate and strong coffee with mild alcohol presence. Notes of vanilla. Smooth and deadly drinkable. Pleasant long-lasting roasty aftertaste. Excellent brew.

Nov 19, 2009 Wow, #200! This bottle (presumably 2009) was my first-ever Speedway, and it’s pretty fantastic!
Smell is surprisingly subdued, but primarily a nice, potent black coffee. Also contains touches of booze and butterscotch (I’m admitted stuffy today, but that’s what I smelled). Pours a thick pitch black liquid capped by a thin bubbly dark tan head that just barely clings to the glass.
Flavor is potent with the Ryan Brothers coffee and warmth from the high ABV. Fades through to a nice tart fruit flavor and ends just a bit sweet and smoky. Incredibly creamy and smooth mouthfeel, and very drinkable for such a big beer.

Nov 17, 2009 Far and away the most substantial beer I’ve had. There’s just a lot going on here. Coffee dominates the aroma, which isn’t terribly strong, and dominates the taste even more. Very thick, but not cloying. Coffee, chocolate, smoke, and just a bit of fruit. This is a fine beer, but be careful that you don’t overdo it.

Nov 16, 2009 overall a very fine brew. In tasting against darklord and narke stormaktsporter was a little disappointed. Not quite as complex in terms of flavour profile compared to the others. Predominant coffee on the nose and flavour. Also some bitter chocolate flavour Palate sets this beer apart from others, smooth and easy to drink. Similar flavour profile to peche mortel and founders breakfast. A fine brew for certain just not as standoutish as I had hoped
