Commercial Description:
Stumblin' Monk is a Belgian-style tripel with a certain je ne sais quois about it that will have you stumblin' drunk trying to figure it out. Three secret spices, along with the traditional coriander, orange peel and Belgian Candi sugar, are fermented by yeast from a real Trappist monastery, making this a beer that truly must be tasted to be described. Stumblin' Monk has a deep golden color, which belies its hearty body and high alcohol content. The aroma gives away its secrets of coriander and orange peel, but its flavor is simply (or more accurately, "complexly") amazing. Thanks to bottle-conditioning, it has a thick, creamy mouthfeel, but that's just the beginning. Layers upon layers of flavors unfold upon the palate in rapid succession. It starts with orange and coriander flavors, then quickly melts into a lush, warm, clove-banana sensation. The flavor then gradually fades to a very slightly bitter, slightly malty-sweet finish.

This beer came courtesy of Tom Nickel who was kind enough to break this out of his personal cellar at Obriens last night. This beer pours a cloudy yellow color with a thin white soapy head which was practically non-existent. The aroma is coriander, ginger and other big time spices....sour and pepperminty all in one...it was truly different from any sort of Alesmith beer Ive come to expect. Medium bodied, peppery and dry finish, lemon hints, peach hints, coriander and citrus peel..sweet dry finish... absolutely phenomenal rare beer..it had faded somewhat with time, but still had many of its highly carbonated, spicey and fruity qualities.

Thank you so much Tom....Poursa cloudy hue with a halo of a white head. Aromas of yeast, peppermint, honey, pineapple. Mouthfeel is medium bodies and smooth. Flavors of pepperminy, hint of yeast esters, apples, flowery, a hint of pepper, and a little lemon and peach. WOW>>>>>> I am glad to have had the opportunity to try such a delicious brew.

750 ml bottle: Cloudy apricot color with a creamy head. Aroma is yeast, orange peel and coriander. Fizzy. Complex spicy flavors. Citrusy tart start with notes of black pepper some clove, coriander, cinnamon and cherries. Hoppy dry orangy finish. A very unique triple. A rare find, this was last brewed 1/13/00.

Bottle pours a hazy orangish/yellow with small but large bubbly white head.   First thing noted would be a sweet butterscotch smell, that and a banana yeasty/bready aroma.   Very interesting flavors... hard to put my finger on it.   Spoze thats the "je ne sais quois" they are talking about.   A bit sweet, citrusy, as well as tart at the start.   Very smooth on the palate...   Sweet candy finish, more candy flavor (butterscotch seems closest, perhaps some caramel), and some citrusy tones as well as cloves.   Did I mention smooth?   The 9.7% ABV is well hidden.   A truly unique brew this is!    Thanks goes out to herbjones for the trade!

Very yeasty and spicy nose hidden beneath a load of hops. Coriander is strong and assertive, fading to complex, raison and dark fruits, other various spices and alcohol lurking underneath. Long and rich, flavor lasts a long, long time. I could handle this more often than I can other tripels. Hoppy, orange finish is bitter and dry from the alcohol, but those long complex flavors linger a bit... Thanks to herbjones!

Fun stuffed with hops. Didn't realize it was a tripple style -- more of just a really strong hopped beer. Some yeast, bread, cookie flavors as well. Didn't also detect much alcohol. Some funky tangerine flavors too. Good.

Cloudy, and light orange in color. No head to speak of. Aroma of candi sugar and mostly orange peels and spice. I bake some, so I say alspice, nutmeg and mace. This is not like any trappist that I've had. More like a De Dolle, which I also really like! Finish mostly citrus. Excellent. Thanks Herbojones & JCalabres!
