Commercial Description:
Stumblin' Monk is a Belgian-style tripel with a certain je ne sais quois about it that will have you stumblin' drunk trying to figure it out. Three secret spices, along with the traditional coriander, orange peel and Belgian Candi sugar, are fermented by yeast from a real Trappist monastery, making this a beer that truly must be tasted to be described. Stumblin' Monk has a deep golden color, which belies its hearty body and high alcohol content. The aroma gives away its secrets of coriander and orange peel, but its flavor is simply (or more accurately, "complexly") amazing. Thanks to bottle-conditioning, it has a thick, creamy mouthfeel, but that's just the beginning. Layers upon layers of flavors unfold upon the palate in rapid succession. It starts with orange and coriander flavors, then quickly melts into a lush, warm, clove-banana sensation. The flavor then gradually fades to a very slightly bitter, slightly malty-sweet finish.

An unclear orange beer with a small beige head. The aroma is lovely sweet combined with notes of oranges and peaches. The flavor is of a very well aged beer with notes of spices, oranges, and peach, leading to a dry finish with some notes of coriander. A great triple - the best non-Belgian Triple I’ve had.

Bottle - 1999 vintage... This beer rocks!... Cloudy, light yellow ale with a large, rocky, white head. Spicy, floral, fruity nose. Perfectly balanced and creamy with soft carbonation. Lengthy, spicy, fruity, dry finish. The two things I normally hate about tripels (cloying sweetness and stickiness) are absent from this one. World class ale! Bigtime props to eyedrinkale for pulling this one out of his extensive cellar to share!

Lightly hazy orange golden color and a thin lacey white head. Aroma is sweet caramel malt with some candi sugar, soft grapes, and Belgian yeast spice. Body is sweet, complex and full. Great Belgian yeast flavor beats Ommegang and Unibroue. Good balance throughout, perfectly sweet and mellow, and the alcohol is hidden very well. Yet another great offering from Alesmith. Thanks jcalabre!

Thanks to Tom Nickel for breaking out this rare bottle. Although bottle conditioned and sampled in San Diego, I’d be very surprised to see how this stuff would be rated if anyone didn’t know it came from Alesmith. I thought it lost a lot of carbonation. Taste is sweet orange, ginger, coriander, candy sugars and light malts. Didn’t really hold up that well but the flavors are still prominant.

Bottle pours a hazy orangish/yellow with small but large bubbly white head.   First thing noted would be a sweet butterscotch smell, that and a banana yeasty/bready aroma.   Very interesting flavors... hard to put my finger on it.   Spoze thats the "je ne sais quois" they are talking about.   A bit sweet, citrusy, as well as tart at the start.   Very smooth on the palate...   Sweet candy finish, more candy flavor (butterscotch seems closest, perhaps some caramel), and some citrusy tones as well as cloves.   Did I mention smooth?   The 9.7% ABV is well hidden.   A truly unique brew this is!    Thanks goes out to herbjones for the trade!

Medium orange color with a nice creamy head. Intense complex spicy sweet ginger aroma. This beer has one of the best aromas I have encountered. Full bodied and smooth. Starts and ends slightly sweet with bready tones. Remarkably balanced. Thanks DaSilky1!

This tripel pours with a cloudy golden body with little head or lacing. It smells like a halls menthol cough drop. The flavor is slightly sweet and minty with a nice fruitiness and great spice notes. Medium bodied and very smooth.

Hazy orange pour w/ no head. The aroma is like spearmint w/ some fruity notes. Medium mouthfeel w/ a velvety texture and a soft fruity taste on the tongue. Finishes smoothly. Absolutely no hint of alcohol. Great job.
