J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Bottle: Poured dark brown in tulip glass as suggested. Medium diminishing light brown head. Swells of raosted barley and vanilla. Sweet, almost toast like, yeasty flavor with hints of vanilla and brown sugar. Felt thick and creamy in the mouth. Overall... I want another one!

Bottle from Whole Foods. Pours a dark amber shade with beige head that leaves a fair amount of lacing. Smells of molasses and barley with traces of peat. Incredibly smooth for the style. Really features chewy caramel more than the earthy flavors of peat and barley. Tastes much creamier and a bit sweeter than I was expecting. Well done.

Bottle that came courtesy of Reluctant Scooper and Beer Merchants following a competition I entered, consumed 18-03-09 Many thanks to Simon (Haddonsman) and Phil L This poured dark brown with a light beige head. Aroma is noticeably quite sweet plenty of dark cane sugar, vanilla, dark sticky fruits and some gentle wisps of alcohol. Flavour is just so wonderfully smooth, this a real sipper, very indulgent feel about it, simply marvellous. There is a rich creaminess about this the dark fruits come through there are sticky dates, port or sherry (not sure which, I get them mixed up when they show up in beer) vanilla and its just lovely. Got to forget about rating it and just sit back and enjoy the experience, bloody wonderful stuff. A8 A4 F9 P5 OV17 4.3

Pours a deep reddish brown color with a small, foamy head tan head that fades and leaves spots of lacing behind. THe aroma is nice and shows milk chocolate, caramel, molasses, and some oaky vanilla. Hints of smoked peat are found as well. The flavor is just as rich, but well blended between the chocolate and caramel sweetness, and the vanilla oak and earthy hops. A touch of dark fruit, raisins, and figs comes through as well adding nice depth. Medium bodied, smooth, but just a bit warm from the alcohol. The sweetness lingers in the finish with the alcohol warmth all the way down. Really nice scotch ale, but I have come to expect nothing less from these guys.

[Bottle] Pours a hazy, chalky looking caramel brown with a moderate beige head that dissipates to nearly nothing. Aroma is very vinous, with some sherry-like oxidation and port notes, lots of caramel, fruity yeast, and some raisins. Flavor is dominated by the sherry notes, with raisins and caramel sneaking in behind. Some alcohol is also evident on the palate as well.

Thanks to JuiceIsLoose for sharing! Great contribution to the Thursday night meetup. Pours a dark brown with a light tan head. Aromas are packed with malt, caramel and a nice alcohol kick. Flavors follow, with malts and alcohol. Very good Wee Heavy.
